CSU Dominguez Hills is a highly diverse, metropolitan university primarily serving the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Established in 1960, CSU Dominguez Hills is one of the 23 campuses that comprise the California State University system. About the Position The Project Archivist position will work to complete digitization and metadata work related to The African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians Collection/Payton Archive of Sacred Music. This is a 12-month full-time position with benefits and the possibility of extending the position beyond the initial 12 months (pending funding). Reporting to the Head of Archives & Special Collections, the Project Archivist serves as a part of a team that selects and prioritizes collections for digitization. The Archivist will scan items, generate metadata, and catalog digital collections by adding them to
CONTENTDM.
Additionally, the Project Archivist will perform archival arrangement and description when necessary. The archivist may oversee the work of student workers or interns. The Archivist may also perform archival reference duties and other duties as assigned. The Payton Archive of Sacred Music consists of music, books, periodicals, documents, audio & visual materials, and oral histories. The primary goal of the Archive is to facilitate research and documentation of African Diaspora sacred music (church music and religious concert music) created and/or performed by the multicultural population of Southern California. The Archival collections in this project include the Hansonia Caldwell Papers, the Don Lee White Collection, the Jester Hairston Collection, the Albert McNeil Papers, and other collections. Minimum Qualifications BA in relevant field or Masters' degree in History, Masters' degree in Library and Information Science or another related degree. 1 year of experience in an archival institution generating metadata, conducting digitization of physical materials, and working to arrange and describe collections. Types of materials will include physical materials, born-digital materials, or audio/video materials. Experience with content tools such as CONTENTdm. Strong oral and written communication skills. Familiarity with archival theory and techniques. Knowledge and/or experience with metadata schemes and standards, such asMARC, EAD, VRA
Core, RDA, and Dublin Core. • Familiarity with scanning history materials. Familiarity with office software applications especially Excel. Ability to work effectively and collegially within a team environment Ability to supervise interns and/or students. Ability to lift and move 40-pound containers.
