ABOUT THE AMERICAN PHILATELIC SOCIETY AND THE AMERICAN PHILATELIC RESEARCH LIBRARY
The American Philatelic Society is a non-profit organization for stamp collectors worldwide. Founded in 1886, the APS serves collectors, educators, postal historians, and the general public by providing a wide variety of programs and services. The American Philatelic Research Library (www.stamplibrary.org ) holds more than 85,000 volumes of books, periodicals, auction catalogs, government documents, and other materials related to stamps, postal history, the postal service and more. It is the largest public library in the world dedicated to stamp collecting and postal history. The library serves philatelic researchers from all over the world, and is dedicated to broadening its access by continually improving its digital collections.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Digital Projects Assistant will work with the digital library team to digitize and make accessible materials from the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL)'s collections.
SCHEDULE
This position is part-time, 20 hours/week. The Assistant must be able to work on-site in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. The weekly schedule is flexible, but must fall within the Library's operating hours (8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Digitization of items using the library's scanning and photographic equipment.
  • Creating and assigning metadata to digital files.
  • Uploading digital files and metadata to the digital library via content management software.
  • Performing quality control, color management, and minor editing on digitized items.
  • Handling rare and fragile materials.
  • Coordinating with volunteers who are assisting with digital library projects.
  • Assisting with the improvement and development of the Robert A. Mason Digital Library.
  • Supporting other digitization efforts as needed, including digital content projects, metadata development, digital preservation, and other tasks within the American Philatelic Society and American Philatelic Research Library.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to adapt to new technology
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Suite
  • Ability to work independently
Preferred:
Candidates will receive all necessary on-site training and support regarding the library's digitization processes, and use of software and scanning equipment, however some prior experience in the following areas would be a bonus:
  • Familiarity with CONTENTdm or similar digital asset management systems
  • Experience with image processing software such as Adobe Photoshop
  • Familiarity with scanning software and equipment
  • Prior experience in a library or archives environment
