PART-TIME Position title: Adjunct Lecturer, Temporary Position description The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University ( www.finearts.howard.edu ) invites applications for a part-time Adjunct Lecturer, temporary faculty position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Theatre Arts - Musical Theatre program for the 2026-2027 academic year (August 2026 through May 2027), with the possibility of reappointment. We seek a dynamic Musical Theatre artist-educator to co-teach an integrated sequence of Musical Theatre Techniques courses for juniors and seniors and a History of Musical Theatre course, with a significant emphasis in African Diasporic and African American traditions. This position is expected to teach 8 credits in Fall 2026 and 6 credits in Spring 2027. The position encompasses musical direction within a classroom environment, vocal coaching, and educational instruction. Additionally, this faculty member will assist in training undergraduate students in vocal performance technique and acting through song that ultimately culminates in a capstone project and an industry showcase during the senior year. The ideal candidate will have strong collaborative skills, extensive knowledge in musical theatre with an emphasis on African Diasporic and African American traditions, strong piano skills, and extensive experience in arrangements and conducting. The vision for the Department of Theatre Arts is to become a hub for the Black dramatic arts intelligence, a haven for its legacy and a pre-eminent training ground for its aesthetic and cultural activism. Employing research, experimentation, production, performance and the education of emerging professionals, we nurture holistic, multi-hyphenate, collaborative, interdisciplinary dramatic arts creatives prepared to pioneer and lead aesthetic/cultural activism on the national and global stage. Primary Responsibilities:
Collaboratively teach musical theatre technique courses in musical theatre performance, vocal techniques (including contemporary commercial music), vocal coaching, and audition preparation. Mentor seniors through capstone preparation, reflective practice, and showcase preparation Collaboratively teach a history of musical theatre course examining musical theatre with an emphasis on African American and African Diasporic contributions and on performance analysis Advise and mentor students in audition preparation, rehearsal processes, and professional readiness Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree (PhD, MFA, MM, or equivalent) in Piano, Musical Theatre, Voice, Music, Theatre, or a closely related field Demonstrated knowledge of African American and African Diasporic performance traditions Strong piano proficiency appropriate for classroom instruction and vocal coaching support Exceptional sight-reading, improvisation, and the ability to work with student performers Strong collaborative leadership skills working with directors, choreographers, and designers Knowledge of musical theatre history and repertoire, including significant emphasis on African American and African Diasporic traditions and contributions Evidence of effective teaching, collaboration, and commitment to student success Preferred Qualifications:
Terminal degree (MFA, DMA, or PhD) in a relevant discipline Experience in teaching musical theatre, conducting from the piano, and collaborating with theatre/dance departments. Evidence of inclusive teaching practices and commitment to student success Ability to help students synthesize techniques into performance, analyze songs as dramatic texts, collaborate effectively, and cultivate an individual artistic voice rooted in historical and cultural awareness Experience with participating in department meetings, committee work, and departmental service. Duties:
The successful applicant will teach up to 8 credit hours per semester load with an initial contract of 1-year. Responsibilities will include teaching courses at the undergraduate level in the department's program curricula; mentoring undergraduate students; participating in departmental activities, and college and university administrative service. Compliance Salary Range Disclosure Expected Pay Range:
