PART-TIME Position title: Adjunct Lecturer, Temporary Position description The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University ( www.finearts.howard.edu ) seeks applications for a part-time Adjunct Lecturer, temporary faculty position in the nationally renowned Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Theatre Arts - Musical Theatre program to teach undergraduate courses emphasizing acting through song, musical staging, vocal performance for actors, and audition techniques. The Department of Theatre Arts seeks a dynamic, student-centered artist-educator with strong expertise in acting pedagogy and professional practice for a part-time adjunct position in Musical Theatre Acting. This appointment is for the 2026-2027 academic year (August 2026-May 2027), with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in musical theatre acting, guiding students in applying foundational acting principles to song interpretation, character development, and integrated performance. The role includes mentoring students, contributing to production work, and participating in program development. This position is integral to fostering an interdisciplinary training environment where acting, voice, and movement are treated as interconnected disciplines. Additional teaching assignments within the acting curriculum may be available based on departmental needs and the candidate's expertise. The faculty member will also support the development of students' performance skills in acting through song, contributing to their preparation for capstone projects and senior industry showcases. The vision for the Department of Theatre Arts is to become a hub for the Black dramatic arts intelligence, a haven for its legacy and a pre-eminent training ground for its aesthetic and cultural activism. Primary Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate, acting-focused courses in the Musical Theatre program, which may include Character Scene Study and Acting Techniques. Collaboratively teach the Musical Theatre Technique course to train students to deliver truthful, character-driven performances while managing the technical demands of singing and dancing. Prepare and deliver course syllabi, assignments, and assessments aligned with departmental standards. Duties:
The successful applicant will teach up to 8 credit hours per semester load with an initial contract of 1-year. Responsibilities will include teaching courses at the undergraduate level in the department's program curricula; mentoring undergraduate students; participating in departmental activities, and college and university administrative service. Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree (PhD, MFA, MM, or equivalent) in Acting, Musical Theatre, Voice, Music, Theatre, or a closely related field; equivalent experience Strong pedagogical techniques in diverse acting techniques adapted for musical theatre, focusing on character analysis, objective, and obstacle within a singing context. Evidence of effective teaching, coaching, or training experience Ability to collaborate across disciplines, including voice and dance Preferred Qualifications:
Terminal degree (MFA, DMA, or PhD) in a relevant discipline Active engagement in the professional theatre industry (Broadway, regional theatre, touring productions, film/TV) The ability to teach movement-based acting and physical storytelling to ensure actors are expressive and supported vocally and physically Familiarity with contemporary audition practices and industry expectations Compliance Salary Range Disclosure Expected Pay Range:
