The Department of Music at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is recruiting a pool of qualified individuals for possible part-time adjunct teaching appointments. For the current academic year, the Music department anticipates instructional needs for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 in Ebony Expressions Gospel Choir. Within the College of Arts & Sciences, adjunct faculty may be responsible for:- Teaching assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses depending on unit need
- Preparing syllabi and course materials
- Delivering instruction and assessing student learning
- Holding office hours
- Fulfilling other instructional duties consistent with departmental needs
- Weekly rehearsals
- 2-3 on-campus performances are expected per semester
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree in Music or a closely related field, or equivalent experience and qualifications is required at the time of appointment (August 10 for fall or January 10 for spring. Previous experience directing a Gospel Choir.Preferred Qualifications:
A Ph.D., D.M.A., or ABD with specialization in Music or a closely related field is preferred at the time of appointment (August 10 for fall or January 10 for spring). Previous academic teaching experience. Previous experience directing a college or university Gospel Choir. Ability to serve as the piano accompanist for the ensemble.Conditions of Employment:
This position is also not eligible for work visa sponsorship. This is a part-time position restricted to the term to which it is assigned and hired, and is not eligible for benefits. The position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or overnight work as needed to meet operational requirements. As part-time exempt employees, adjuncts are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program. Total hours worked may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week over a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year. Within Arts & Sciences, adjunct instructional workload limits apply. Total adjunct work hours for part-time employment from May 1 through April 30 may not exceed 1,500 hours, generally equating to up to 14 credit hours for fall/spring and up to 6 for summer, not to exceed 18 credit hours for the year. Adjuncts within the College of Arts & Sciences at William & Mary must maintain an in-person presence for the duration of their appointment. Remote teaching opportunities are rare and subject to approval. Appointments are limited to a specified term and may include the following instructional sessions: Summer Session 1: May 26- June 26
