  • Rio Grande Valley is seeking applications for a one-year appointment as Lecturer I in Applied Music to join the UTRGV School of Music to start Fall 2025/Spring 2026 in Brownsville & Edinburg campuses.
Primary responsibilities include teaching applied lessons, methods courses, directing the ensemble, music appreciation; and other duties assigned as needed by the School of Music Director. The position requires a demonstrated record of performance and a successful teaching record. Candidates should demonstrate the potential for continued scholarly/performance and recruitment activity. The successful candidate will be assigned the standard academic teaching load for the one-year appointment lecture position (maximum of 15 credit hours per semester or a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester). UTRGV faculty will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to student success and to advancing the university, college, and program missions, as well as a commitment to UTRGV's guiding principles (utrgv/strategic-plan/), which include promoting access to postsecondary education to a diverse student body and to become one of the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving emerging research institutions in the U.S.A. There will be multiple positions available, each with teaching assignments that may include applied instruction on various instruments, collaborative piano, and lecture-based courses such as world music and music theory. Minimum Qualifications Master's in Music is required from an accredited university. Discipline Specific Required Qualifications University performance and teaching experience. Preferred Qualification Doctorate of Musical Arts Preferred from an accredited university. Performance and teaching experience on the instrument, ability to recruit students, and secondary teaching experience. Preference is given to applicants who are willing to teach at both the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses. Salary One-Year Lecturers are paid a 9-month academic rate commensurate with experience and/or qualification in the discipline. All positions are subject to budget approval. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Please Note Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
