Our mission is to help connect people to their worlds through our Language Access, Inclusion, Education, Hearing Health, and Speech-Language Pathology programming. Gateway Maryland is a leader in communication services in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. We offer a wide array of services for those with communication differences and/or disorders and operate a school for children with communication disorders. We are well recognized within the non-profit sector for our work in this community by the media, opinion leaders, and the general public, and we have established ourselves as one of the most prestigious resource centers in our field. Position Summary Gateway School is seeking a creative, flexible, and student-centered Fine Arts Teacher to provide engaging art and/or theatre instruction for students in grades K-8 with autism and communication-related disorders. This position may be part-time or full-time, depending on candidate availability and program needs. The ideal candidate is passionate about using the arts as a means of expression, communication, and skill development, and is able to adapt instruction to meet a wide range of learning, sensory, and behavioral needs.   • Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate art and/or theatre lessons aligned with student needs and IEP goals.
  • Adapt curriculum to support students with autism, communication challenges, and diverse learning profiles.
  • Incorporate visual supports, structured routines, and multi-sensory instructional strategies.
  • Foster creativity, self-expression, and social engagement through the arts.
  • Manage classroom behavior using positive behavior supports and trauma-informed practices.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, related service providers, and administration.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Prepare student artwork and/or performances for school-wide events and showcases. Professional and Personal Disposition

  • Maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding student information. Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (required)
  • Valid MSDE licensure in Art (K-12) and/or Theatre (K-12)
  • Experience working with children, specifically those with special communication needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Creativity, flexibility, and a passion for working with diverse learners.
  • Ability to provide a good verbal speech and language model.
  • Experience integrating art or theatre into therapeutic or communication-based instruction (preferred).
  • Familiarity with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) systems (preferred).
  • Ability to design sensory-friendly and accessible art experiences.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proven endeavors toward professional growth and learning.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Suite
  • Minimum of two years relevant experience preferred.
  • Physical ability to perform essential functions of this job successfully (requires to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, move quickly, live or move more than 50 lbs.
) Work Schedule Part-time or full-time options available based on candidate qualifications and program needs
