EXEMPT X NON-EXEMPT JOB DESCRIPTION
The ESL Teacher instruct students whose first language is not English to learn to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade-level proficiency in all academic areas. Create a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students enrolled in an education setting. Establishes effective rapport with students. Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil's ability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, school and agency counselors, and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students enrolled in the education setting. Assist in the development and implementation of the individual education service and transition plan for students enrolled in the education setting. Instruct students in a program of study that meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade-level standards. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, and policies and procedures of Birmingham City Schools. Collaborate with the teacher of record to develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with curriculum standards; provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors. Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports and other recordkeeping activities as necessary. Communicate regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress. Supervise and monitor student movement and escorts students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes, and other activities in the building. Administer standardized testing. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university A valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate Must meet Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) federal and state requirements or a willingness to meet the requirements within the designated timeframe •
