Post Doctoral Fellow - Biology Posting Number req36552 Employment Type Faculty Faculty Type Hiring Department AS Biology General Administrative (048F) Academic Location Campus Main - Albuquerque, NM Benefits Eligible Postdoctoral Fellows may be eligible to receive certain UNM benefits . See the Benefits home page for more information. Position Summary The Department of Biology is requesting approval to hire Soham Mukhopadhyay as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Biology effective 5/18/2026. This hire is for Dr. Syed Mubarak who will be the principal investigator on the project. It is crucial that the department be able to hire Dr. Sajad Ahmad Bhat in order to conduct research activities needed. Dr. Bhat will be actively involved in all components of current projects in the lab including investigating the developmental and molecular mechanisms that generate neural cell types within the Drosophila central complex, a brain region critical for navigation and behavioral state regulation. There will be specific interest in how neural stem cell-specific developmental and metabolic programs coordinate brain development. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach, including: Advanced Drosophila genetics and lineage analysis, Immunohistochemistry and high-resolution imaging, Genomics approaches (RNA-seq, TaDa, TRIBE), and CRISPR-based gene editing. Dr. Bhat will develop and lead an independent research project aligned with the lab's current and future directions, in close collaboration with Dr. Syed. Dr. Bhat is intellectually curious, highly motivated, capable of independent thinking, and collaborative in a team environment. Dr. Bhat also has extensive training in Drosophila genetics, neuroscience, and metabolism. In addition to research, Dr. Bhat will contribute to the lab's broader mission through engagement with the Pueblo Brain Science Initiative, a community-centered program focused on science education and outreach across
New Mexico Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
PHD in discipline by the start date of appointment Preferred Qualification Prior experience in neuroscience and metabolic studies using Drosophila as a model. Experience with molecular biology techniques and metabolic assays Experience with studying neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases using Drosophila as a model system.
