  • Position Summary The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teacher provides engaging, hands-on instruction to high school students in an alternative education setting, with a focus on developing career readiness, business skills, technical skills, and employability.
This position emphasizes practical learning experiences in areas such as computer applications, basic technology, basic business, and/or shop-related skills, while supporting students with diverse learning needs, including those receiving special education services.
  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver CTE curriculum aligned with state standards and student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Provide instruction in areas such as: o Computer skills (e.g., digital literacy, basic coding, office software) o Shop/industrial skills (e.g., tool safety, construction basics, hands-on projects) o Career exploration and workplace readiness
  • Adapt instructional strategies and materials to meet diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs
  • Create a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment conducive to alternative learners
  • Integrate employability skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and responsibility
  • Assess student progress regularly and maintain accurate records in compliance with IEP goals
  • Collaborate with special education staff, general education teachers, and related service providers
  • Implement behavior management strategies consistent with school and cooperative policies
  • Facilitate real-world learning opportunities such as job simulations, internships, or community-based instruction (where applicable)
  • Maintain equipment, tools, and classroom/lab safety standards
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Career and Technical Education, Industrial Technology, Education, or related field
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with appropriate CTE endorsement (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience working with high school students, preferably in alternative or special education settings
  • Knowledge of both technology-based and hands-on/shop instruction preferred
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and support students with varying abilities and needs
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • LBS1 (Learning Behavior Specialist) endorsement or willingness to obtain
  • Experience in alternative education environments
  • Industry experience in trades, manufacturing, or information technology
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and restorative approaches
  • Working Conditions
  • Classroom and shop/lab environment with moderate physical activity
  • Standing, bending, lifting, and use of tools/equipment may be required
  • Exposure to noise and machinery in shop settings
