CMS ATHLETICS
The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program is comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges and offers a comprehensive program of regular physical education, intramural, recreational, club, and varsity sports. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) as a member of NCAA Division III. The Program is comprised of 21 varsity sports (10 men's, 11 women's) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student-athlete population of approximately 530.
CMS SWIMMING AND DIVING CMS
Swimming and Diving boasts a strong history of success. Our men's and women's squads have earned team conference championships 62 times. At the national level, CMS has placed in the top 15 at the
NCAA D-III
Championships 40 times. CMS swimmers have won at least one individual NCAA event championship in each of the past 5 seasons. The men's and women's teams have received CSCAA Scholar All-American honors each year of the award's existence, posting 3.52 and 3.60 team GPAs in Fall 2026. BASIC FUNCTION
The Assistant Coach or Associate Head Coach for Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving/Aquatics Operations Manager plays a significant leadership role in the administration and daily operation of the CMS Swimming and Diving program. The position is responsible for independently leading and overseeing designated aspects of the program, including but not limited to: planning and conducting team training sessions and practices; recruiting and evaluating prospective scholar-athletes; coordinating team travel and operational logistics; supporting scholar-athlete development and well-being; managing aquatics operations; and ensuring compliance with all applicable institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. In collaboration with the Head Coach, the position exercises independent judgment and decision-making in the development, implementation, and management of program strategies, culture, and operations. The role may supervise assigned staff, student workers, or operational areas and is responsible for carrying out administrative and programmatic responsibilities essential to the success of the swimming and diving program. Additionally, this position will collaborate with CMS Recreation to manage all aspects of Axelrood Pool facility operations, ensuring a safe, engaging, and well-managed environment for students, staff, and faculty. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS
Reporting to the Head Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Coach, the Assistant Coach or Associate Head Coach works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities: Coaching Independently develop, implement, and oversee training plans, practice instruction, and competitive preparation for designated training groups and/or program areas in partnership with the Head Coach, while contributing to the overall strategic direction and performance development of the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving program. Lead and manage designated administrative and operational aspects of the program, including but not limited to: timely completion of administrative processes and documentation; coordination of team travel logistics; development of practice plans; scholar-athlete and team culture development; aquatics operations; and collaboration with CMS Athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operations, compliance, equipment, facilities, and event management. Exercise independent judgment in prioritizing and executing operational responsibilities essential to the success of the program. Play a leadership role in the recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes for the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Scripps College, including identifying and evaluating prospects, cultivating relationships with prospective student-athletes and families, and guiding recruits through the admissions and enrollment process. Comply with all rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA Division
III, CMS
Athletics, and the SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), reporting any violations or concerns to the CMS Compliance Department. Remain in good standing of all required training and certifications, including but not limited to concussion management, mental health resources, and sexual violence prevention. Represent the CMS Athletic Department and the Swimming and Diving program in a positive manner within the SCIAC as well as regionally and nationally. Aquatics Operations Recruit, certify, oversee, and schedule lifeguards to ensure optimal support for the Swimming and Diving, Water Polo, and CMS Recreation programs. Occasionally lifeguard the pool. Collaborate with CMS Recreation on Aquatics programming and scheduling. Monitor that the facility and equipment are operating correctly, working with the Internal Operations and Facilities Manager and Director of Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations to address any issues promptly. Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS
EDUCATION:
A bachelor's degree or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is required.
EXPERIENCE
Previous collegiate participation and coaching are preferred. Experience in the recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred.
LICENSES
A valid driver's license is required to drive College-owned vehicles and the ability to be insured under the College's authorized driver's policy. National certification as a lifeguard and lifeguard instructor, and certification in CPR and first aid are required.

The regular hours for this full-time position will vary, with the flexibility to set work hours appropriate to the needs of the program. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the Athletics Department.
