: The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a dynamic, forward-looking, and growing organization. We seek well-qualified, highly motivated, creative, and solution-oriented candidates to join our team at The Upward College Program (UCP). To proactively respond the growing needs of the community, since 2011, BACI has successfully implemented after-school programs for area high school students to prepare them for college and educational success. In order to achieve this goal, the UCP implements comprehensive and rigorous program design, which includes providing academic enrichment services, tutoring, and standardized test preparation services to meet the challenging State academic standards. In addition, we offer assistance with college, scholarship, and financial aid applications through individualized mentorship and group sessions. As a youth professional, the UCP College & Success Coach will participate and operate in both group and individualized settings, working with the staff and students in various subject areas, and will promote BACI's mission of enhancing educational opportunities and success for the Burmese-American community. Responsibilities Provide near-peer mentoring to approximately 10-15 Burmese-American high school students in their junior or senior year, with topics includingACT & SAT
test preparation, assistance with college, financial aid, and scholarship application processes, and college transition guidance. Provide tutoring services for high school juniors or seniors at BACI Upward College Program in math, science, English, and other courses. Coordinate special events and components of the program in line with other program objectives related to college preparedness and future success, such as youth and leadership development activities, nutrition and health education, drug and violence prevention, counseling programs, art, music, physical fitness and wellness programs; and financial literacy programs. Participate and assist with BACI volunteer and community service projects. Attend and facilitate coordination of various college/university visits throughout the school year. Assist UCP program staff with planning and organizing program efforts as needed, such as SAT prep, STEM literacy training, and leadership courses. Manage and document all contacts and services in student case files and maintain case note logs. In addition to documenting all services, record student's educational progress in case files, including English competency, academic concerns, whether or not the student participated in any college visits, SAT/ACT test scores, college, financial aid & scholarship application and their status Attend professional development trainings, including UCP staff trainings and meetings in order to ensure staff knowledge and skill set are updated to sustain high quality services. Qualifications Have proven knowledge of higher education system in the US and familiar with colleges and universities in Indiana and the US. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; strong writing highly desired. Must be comfortable tutoring math, science, English, and other courses. Is patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled and dependable. Has the ability to work well with others and follow directions. Previous work experience and interest in teaching, tutoring, youth development, refugee resettlement or other direct social services preferred. International experience desirable - cultural sensitivity and competence is required. Enthusiasm for BACI's mission and strong commitment to helping disadvantaged students achieve academic success and college readiness. Flexibility and availability/willingness to work some weekends.
