North Middlesex Regional High School is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head Varsity Ice Hockey Coach to lead and oversee the high school ice hockey program. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, a commitment to education-based athletics, and the ability to build a competitive program centered on skill development, teamwork, accountability, and sportsmanship. The Head Varsity Ice Hockey Coach will be responsible for all aspects of the varsity program, including practice planning, game preparation, player development, program culture, and collaboration with sub-varsity coaches. The coach will serve as a positive role model who promotes discipline, leadership, character, and academic balance while representing the values of North Middlesex Athletics.Key Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Culture:
Lead and oversee all aspects of the varsity ice hockey program. Establish and maintain a positive, competitive, and team-first culture aligned with the mission of North Middlesex Athletics. Promote sportsmanship, accountability, leadership, and respect both on and off the ice. Serve as a mentor and role model for student-athletes.Coaching & Player Development:
Plan and conduct organized, high-energy practices focused on skill development, systems, conditioning, and team play. Develop athletes both individually and collectively in skating, puck skills, hockey IQ, positioning, and game strategy. Evaluate player performance and provide constructive feedback to support athlete growth. Build a developmental pipeline in collaboration with sub-varsity and youth programs.Game Preparation & Management:
Prepare the team for competition through scouting, game planning, and film or strategy review when appropriate. Manage bench operations, line combinations, special teams, and in-game adjustments. Ensure athletes are mentally and physically prepared for competition. Represent the school and program with professionalism during contests and team events.Communication & Collaboration:
Maintain clear and consistent communication with student-athletes, parents, athletic department staff, and school administration. Collaborate with assistant and sub-varsity coaches to ensure consistency in program philosophy and expectations. Work cooperatively with athletic trainers, facilities staff, transportation, and opposing schools. Support multi-sport participation and encourage positive relationships throughout the athletic department.Safety & Compliance:
Prioritize student-athlete safety and well-being at all times. Enforce proper use of equipment and safe play techniques. Follow all concussion management, injury reporting, and emergency action protocols. Ensure compliance with all MIAA, NFHS, league, and North Middlesex policies and eligibility requirements.Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Previous coaching and/or playing experience in ice hockey. Strong knowledge of hockey systems, skill development, and game management. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and motivate high school student-athletes. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Must meet all district, NFHS, and MIAA coaching requirements, including: NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching NFHS Concussion in Sports First Aid & CPR Certification MIAA Coaching Education ProgramCORI/SORI
Background CheckPreferred Qualifications:
Previous high school varsity coaching experience. Collegiate or high-level playing experience. Experience building and sustaining a successful hockey program and culture. Ability to foster strong relationships with athletes, families, youth programs, and the school community. Commitment to education-based athletics and student-athlete development both on and off the ice.Position Type:
