MHSAA Fall Season 2026 Position Summary To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to succeed individually and as a team, while reinforcing the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct Minimum Qualifications Teaching certification and experience preferred Physical Education majors or minors preferred MHSAA CAP, First-Aid, and CPR certification, and sports medicine training preferred [Swimming Coaches•WSI Certification required] Coaching experience•varsity experience preferred Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport while continuing to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to this field Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program (head coach) Promotes academics as the major priority Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with a focus on mentoring young athletes Communicates in a positive manner with athletes, coaching staff, parents, administrators, and community Shows competency in theory and techniques of coaching Is punctual and has good attendance Job Responsibilities Plans and conducts efficient, safe practices and directs in-game strategies, including implementing offensive/defensive schemes often provided by the varsity staff Instructs student-athletes in fundamental skills, proper tackling/blocking techniques, and physical conditioning Monitors athlete safety, oversees proper use of equipment, tracks physicals/concussion paperwork, and reports injuries following district protocols Oversees equipment inventory, distribution, and collection; coordinates scheduling and transportation with the athletic director Manages equipment inventory, locker rooms, and ensures all doors/lights are secured after use Communicates effectively with parents, players, school officials, and opposing coaches regarding schedules and team rules Fosters a positive environment that emphasizes academic progress, sportsmanship, and personal growth Ensures the safety of players by following safety protocols, such as those related to concussions and heat safety, and having appropriate certifications (e.g., CPR) Focuses on building team chemistry and a positive culture that encourages players to work together on and off the field Key Physical Functions Prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and running for long durations on uneven playing surfaces Ability to move around frequently during practice, and demonstrate high external energy Frequent lifting or moving of football equipment (dummies, tackling shields, blocking sleds), often weighing 40 to 60 pounds Ability to physically demonstrate drills and techniques to young beginners Ability to perform tasks include crouching, crawling, stooping, and turning, requiring good hand-eye coordination Requires strong visual perception (depth, distance, focus) to monitor player safety and read game situations Ability to speak loudly and clearly over long distances to instruct players during practice or games Requires specific vision abilities, including close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus to observe players' performance Ability to monitor players during practices and during games, including reacting quickly to on-field injuries Ability to maintain composure under stress and model positive leadership Potential exposure to bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, and poor air quality (dust, mist) Environment is often loud, particularly during practices and games Work is primarily outdoors; exposure to extreme heat, cold, rain, or high humidityTO APPLY
