POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim classes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Be knowledgeable, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Always keeping Safety at the forefront of your mind. \ Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.) and completes incident and accident reports as necessary. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other YMCA programs. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
QUALIFICATIONS
YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent. CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications required. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards. At least 16 years of age.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position for long periods of time, including walking, standing, bending, squatting, and kneeling. Visual ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
