Job Description

DEFINITION
Performs public safety and instructional work in supervising swimmers and teaching necessary swimming skills at the municipal waterpark. Also performs routine custodial work in the operation and maintenance of the bathhouse and surrounding areas.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Teaches students of all levels the stroke progression of the learn to swim program Educates students, parents, and guardians about the importance of safety in and around the water such as boating safety, pool rules, and weather precautions Demonstrates strokes and skills with correct technique Offers verbal instruction for all strokes and skills describing correct technique Provides positive corrective feedback to each student multiple times a swim class Maintains fun and positive learning environment for students in the learn to swim program Follows the Last Chance Splash Waterpark and Pool block plan but also writes daily lesson plan for each class taught. Tracks students' progress through the use of check off list. Speaks with parent or guardian of each student to offer suggestions and gain understanding of how to best help each student. Gives direct instruction to water safety instructor aides before, during, and after swim class to the best way for the WSI Aide to assist in the class. Completes progress reports before last class has completed. Completes Activity Report with in seven days of swim lesson session. Picks up manipulative after each class. Assists with daily pool operations such as cleaning the pool deck, putting in the lane lines, and other related duties. Leads lightning lessons, when necessary.

SAFETY RELATED DUTIES
Abide by the City of Helena and department/division work practices established for specific job assignments and occupations. Report occupational injuries, illnesses and near misses immediately to their supervisor. Follow supervisor instructions for obtaining first aid and/or medical attention. Participate in accident investigations as requested by the supervisor. Participate fully in safety training. Suggest improvements in safety training requirements or programs to the supervisor or the safety committee. Identify unsafe work conditions and unsafe practices. Correct hazards or report them to the supervisor or safety committee as appropriate.
JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Front Crawl Stroke, Back Crawl Stroke, Butterfly stroke, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke Tuck surface dive, Pike surface dive, feet first surface dive Difference between finning and sculling Diving progression Teaching progression for each learn to swim level All treading water kicks Skill to: Demonstrate all skills and strokes Explain skill and stroke technique in a variety of ways Ability to: Verbally describe how to perform each skill and stroke needed for successfully teaching Encourage students to improve through positive reinforcement and positive corrective feedback Give a variety of tasks to students to keep the lesson interesting and to increase the learning potential Modify each skill depending on the student Teach children who have a variety of disabilities Teach students of all skills levels and age levels Physical Demands Ability to be outside in the water in all weather conditions for an extended period of time. Able to lift small children out of the pool onto the pool deck in emergency situations. Capable of demonstrating all skills and strokes for the "learn to swim program". Able to perform correct support holds needed to teach the "learn to swim program". Work Environment Outside work in the water for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience/Training:
One or more years of teaching, coaching, or interaction with children preferred
License or Certificate:
Water Safety Instructor Certification must be completed within two weeks of hire (training/certification will be provided by the City.)
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervised by Recreation and Aquatics Program Manager and Assistant Aquatics Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises supervision over swim students and water safety instructor aides as to the safe use of the pool and proper stroke technique.
