JOB TITLE
Head Coach of an Athletic Sport (Extracurricular Assignment)
FLSA STATUS
Exempt (Stipend Position)
WORK SCHEDULE
Athletic season as defined by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA); hours vary and include evenings and weekends outside of regular school hours
SALARY:
Paid via stipend according to the Edenton-Chowan Schools Athletic Supplement Schedule
REPORTS TO
Athletic Director, John A. Holmes High School
SUPERVISES
Assistant coaches, student-athletes, and team support personnel
JOB SUMMARY
The Head Coach is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the assigned athletic program at John A. Holmes High School. This includes fostering student-athlete development, promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, and academic success, and ensuring compliance with all school, district, and NCHSAA regulations. The Head Coach provides leadership, organization, and supervision for the team while supporting the mission and goals of Edenton-Chowan Schools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrate knowledge of and comply with all rules and regulations of the NCHSAA, school district, and conference Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and respect among student-athletes Organize and conduct preseason meetings with athletes and parents Develop and implement structured practice plans that support individual and team skill development Supervise all practices, workouts, and team activities at all times Establish and enforce standards of behavior for student-athletes and assistant coaches Ensure student-athletes meet eligibility requirements, including academics and required physical documentation Monitor academic progress and encourage student-athlete achievement in the classroom Maintain accurate records including rosters, eligibility forms, emergency contacts, and equipment inventory Submit team rosters and updates to the Athletic Director in a timely manner Coordinate scheduling of facilities for practices, games, and conditioning sessions Work collaboratively with athletic trainers to ensure player safety and injury management Secure all facilities, equipment, and locker rooms after use Ensure compliance with all financial procedures related to the athletic program Manage team budget responsibly and maintain appropriate account balances Assign responsibilities to assistant coaches and oversee their performance Develop game strategies and evaluate team performance for continuous improvement Supervise student-athletes until they have safely left campus after practices or events
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training:
High school diploma required; college experience preferred
Experience:
Prior coaching and/or playing experience in the assigned sport preferred Experience working with high school-aged students strongly preferred
Certifications:
Must meet all coaching certification requirements set by the State of North Carolina and Edenton-Chowan Schools (including CPR/AED, concussion training, etc.)
Other Requirements:
Ability to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires standing, walking, running, and active participation during practices and games May involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling equipment up to 50 pounds Requires stamina and the ability to work extended hours during athletic seasons
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions Exposure to heat, cold, rain, noise, and other environmental factors is common May involve interaction with large groups, crowds, and high-energy situations
EXPECTATIONS
Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes Maintain professionalism in all interactions with students, staff, parents, and community members Support the overall athletic program and school community
