Wilderness Skills Instructor 1195 Florence Columbus Rd, Bordentown, NJ 08505 $1,950 a month - Temporary, Contract $1,950 a month - Temporary, Contract Position Overview The Wilderness Skills Specialist leads engaging outdoor adventure experiences for campers entering grades 1-9. Specialists teach wilderness and survival-based activities that foster resilience, teamwork, confidence, leadership, and appreciation for nature. The ideal candidate enjoys working with children, thrives outdoors, and can create exciting, age-appropriate experiences that balance fun, safety, and character development. Key ExpectationsCreativity Lead engaging wilderness programs that inspire campers to learn, grow, and step outside their comfort zones. Engagement Participate enthusiastically in electives, camp traditions, and spirit events, showing campers the power of community. Responsibility Ensure all wilderness and activity areas are safe, clean, organized, and welcoming. Leadership Mentor and guide campers and fellow staff members with a focus on growth, encouragement, and positive role modeling. Professionalism Follow instructions from supervisors and camp directors, attend all trainings, and adhere to camp policies, schedules, and procedures outlined in the staff handbook. Specific Responsibilities Design and write an 8-week wilderness skills curriculum during the Winter/Spring planning period Create and manage supply and equipment lists for review by the Program Team Lead or assist daily wilderness and outdoor survival activities Teach age-appropriate outdoor skills including: Shelter building Fire safety and campfire building Orienteering and navigation Knot tying Outdoor cooking Nature awareness Hiking and trail skills Basic survival techniques Facilitate activities that emphasize collaboration and Liberty Lake's Star Points of Character Model and reinforce the Liberty Lake Character Campaign (DLP, beads, "fuzzies," etc.) Debrief activities with campers to connect behaviors and experiences to character lessons Maintain equipment and communicate supply needs in a timely and responsible manner Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding camper, staff, or program concerns Report any immediate safety concerns to supervisors, directors, or the Maintenance Team Support camp-wide activities, electives, spirit days, and special events Participate in bus check-out and Parent Pick-Up responsibilities Daily Expectations Arrive by 8:25 AM for Morning Meeting unless assigned to a camp bus Remain through Parent Pick-Up and assigned dismissal responsibilities, typically until 4:15 PM Participate fully in staff meetings, trainings, and camp traditions Qualifications Experience in outdoor education, camping, scouting, environmental education, recreation, or adventure programming preferred Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills Ability to work outdoors in varying summer weather conditions Passion for mentoring children and creating engaging learning experiences CPR/First Aid certification preferred College students, teachers, outdoor educators, and camp professionals encouraged to apply Why Work at Liberty Lake?
