Job Description:
POSITION FUNCTION
The Head Esports Coach reports to the Director of Athletics (AD) and is responsible for the planning, organization, performance and conduct of Onondaga Community College's National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) Esports Coed Team. The Head Esports Coach will operate several games under Esports umbrella based on student interest and NJCAAE offerings. Focus will be on Tier 1 and Tier 2 games of the NJCAAE. Tier 3, or intramural offerings, will be made available as time and space permit. The Esports program competes in the Fall and Spring semesters. This is a part-time position.
POSITION RESPONSIBILTIES
Teach student-athletes about proper game skills, techniques and overall strategy; provide leadership and instruction in the personal, life skill, and gaming development of the student-athlete. Organize, plan and attend practices; offer appropriate match strategy and tactics; attend all contests. Contest must be held in on-campus state-of-the-art Esports Arena. Will work with individual student-athletes in a one-on-one and team-based context. Manage competition platform and roster creation within PlayVS, the chosen competition platform of the NJCAAE. Act professionally when communicating with students, coaches, staff, media and individuals in the community; show respect to all involved; be responsible regarding student-athlete conduct before, during and after contests. Be knowledgeable of the College's policies and procedures on recruiting, academic programs and philosophy of athletic programs; follow all policies both internally and externally. Promote healthy lifestyle choices and habits to our student-athletes. Mentor and advise student-athletes through college registration and the transfer process; ensure that academics come first. Meet with students on regular basis to assist with academic success and personal development. Monitor student-athlete academic progress at all times; manage the retention alert software program, Lazer Success, for all Esports student-athletes. Have an operational understanding of NJCAAE rules and requirements; always follow these guidelines. Build relationships within the Esports community and recruit qualified student-athletes to Onondaga Community College. Manage Esports specific social media accounts to promote the program and highlight successes. Ensure that all members of the Esports team are engaged in a meaningful and enjoyable student-athlete experience while they participate on the team. With the approval of the AD, hire an assistant coach. Work with the AD in preparing annual team operating budgets and follow purchasing guidelines to secure equipment, uniforms and other team and student needs. Supplement team operating budgets with specific fundraising plans and efforts; secure AD approval for these plans. Serve as main point of contact for operation of Esports Arena. Coordinate with IT on needed updates and routine maintenance. Ensure equipment and facilities are secured appropriately after each practice and contest. Exercise discretion in handling emergencies/student crises which might arise. Attend all College, conference and regional meetings as required. Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university, college or foreign equivalency, or a combination of an Associate's degree and related work experience; gaming knowledge; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with intercollegiate Esports program as a player or coach.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Proven success as an Esports coach at the secondary or postsecondary level. Experience working directly with college students. Familiarity of NJCAAE operations. Strong understanding of gaming and IT technology. Bilingual in English and Spanish. English and other languages will be considered.
Additional Information:
Pay rate: $12,500 annual payment
