EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
The social coaches will assist social skills group leaders in day-long social sessions during the ESY summer program for students on the autism spectrum. These sessions are held in the community, at times. Coaches must be willing to walk up to 2 miles in summer heat and take RIPTA transportation on community trips.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES
Working knowledge of social perspective taking, zones of regulation, 5 point scale, theory of mind, social thinking,expected/unexpected behaviors, and little vs big problems
Knowledge of using and reading facial expressions and making eye contact
Independent work ethic
Strong communication skills including effective written and oral English language skills
The ability to develop and maintain working relationships with staff, public, outside organizations and the ability to accomplish goals through persuasion and diplomacy
Minimum of 2 years' experience as a social coach for students on the Autism Spectrum.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS
Assist in the development of social skills activities into which social perspective taking and social thinking are embedded
Prepare necessary materials to implement social activities as directed by group leaders
Assist in planning community based activities inclusive of transportation and admission fees
Implement interventions to address social skills deficits within the program
Identify and implement strategies to address anxiety within the social group
Provide direct social skills services to students consistent with IEP requirements
Provide guidance and support for sensory needs
Model and provide guidance use of social gestures in the moment
Assist and join into imaginative play and trying new leisure activities
Encouragement of the understanding of the perspectives of others in play, conversation, and other social interactions.
Ability to work with teachers, group leaders, and other adults to meet the unique needs of each student and support that student in learning of self-advocacy and situation specific appropriate social responses
Any/all related duties that may be assigned by the Director/Supervisors of Special Education
