Job Description
The Assistant Women's Basketball Coach supports the Head Women's Basketball Coach in the administration and daily operation of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball program. This position assists with practice planning, player development, recruiting, game preparation, and program administration while ensuring compliance with NCAA, Southland Conference, Texas State University System, and Lamar University rules and regulations. The Assistant Coach also contributes to the academic success of student-athletes, assists with community engagement and fundraising efforts, and supports the overall development and graduation of student-athletes.
Program Coaching and Player Development:
Assist the Head Coach with planning and conducting practices, skill development sessions, and competition preparation. Provide on-court instruction and evaluation of student-athletes to support athletic performance and team success.Recruiting and Talent Evaluation:
Assist in the development and execution of a successful recruiting program. Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes who meet the program's athletic and academic standards while adhering to NCAA recruiting rules.Program Administration and Operations:
Assist the Head Coach with administrative duties, including practice organization, game preparation, travel coordination, and other operational responsibilities necessary for effective program management.Student-Athlete Academic Support and Development:
Promote and support the academic progress and graduation of student-athletes. Encourage academic success and assist with monitoring study hall participation and academic progress in coordination with academic support services.Compliance, Community Engagement, and Program Representation:
Ensure strict adherence to NCAA, Southland Conference, Texas State University System, and Lamar University rules and regulations. Represent the program appropriately in media engagements, fundraising initiatives, community outreach, and institutional activities as directed.Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. One to three years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level or equivalent competitive level. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics. Demonstrated ability to recruit and evaluate prospective student-athletes. Ability to effectively instruct and develop student-athletes in a competitive collegiate basketball environment. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited institution. Previous collegiate playing or coaching experience in women's basketball. Experience supporting student-athlete academic success and retention initiatives. Experience participating in fundraising, community engagement, or athletics program promotion.Key Competencies:
Knowledge of NCAA, Southland Conference, and institutional rules governing intercollegiate athletics. Knowledge of basketball coaching techniques, practice planning, and player development strategies. Ability to evaluate athletic talent and effectively recruit prospective student-athletes. Ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and external stakeholders. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to support student-athlete academic achievement and personal development.Physical Requirements:
Ability to demonstrate and participate in basketball drills and practice activities. Ability to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods during practices, games, and recruiting activities. Ability to travel frequently and occasionally lift or move equipment related to team operations.Job Conditions:
Work is performed in a collegiate athletics environment, including offices, practice facilities, and competition venues. The position requires frequent evening and weekend work, extensive travel for recruiting and team competition, and interaction with student-athletes, university staff, alumni, media, and community members.
