Job Description
Grays Harbor College is now accepting applications for a part-time Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Skills Instructor. This position is paid at the adjunct rate of $85.22 per contact hour (approximately 88 hours to be scheduled and coordinated with the lead instructor). The class sessions are at various times during the year and run for six weeks daily. Faculty positions at Grays Harbor College have been designated as bargaining unit positions represented by the Grays Harbor College Federation of Teachers, Local 4984. Provide behind-the-wheel , range , and skills practice aligned with Washington DOL minimum training requirements for CDL-A or CDL-B licensing, including required hours in pre-trip planning, driving, backing, proficiency development, and classroom reinforcement. . Maintain safety standards and ensure students demonstrate readiness for CDL skills testing. Ensure all instructional activities comply with DOL instructor requirements, including adherence to qualifications in WAC 308-100-005 and attestation obligations. Document student progress, skills attainment, hours of training completed, and performance benchmarks in accordance with state and federal standards. Support diverse learners with inclusive, student-centered instruction. Provide coaching, feedback, and structured practice opportunities to develop safe and effective commercial driving skills. Participate in required college meetings, onboarding, or trainings per the adjunct faculty collective bargaining agreement. Collaborate with program leadership to maintain program quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. Meets Washington DOL instructor requirements as outlined inWAC 308-100-005
, including: Minimum 2 years of recent verifiable Class A driving experience. Minimum of 5 years commercial driving experience Eligibility to provide behind-the-wheel and/or theory instruction. Clean driving record consistent with state instructor standards. Commitment to maintaining compliance with state curriculum and training hour requirements. Must be a Washington state resident (per GHC adjunct hiring requirements).PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners from diverse backgrounds. Prior experience as a CDL instructor or corporate driver trainer. Experience working in community college or workforce development settings. Familiarity with Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) federal standards. Ability to integrate safety, professionalism, and industry best practices into instruction Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills. Varied experience in different facets of commercial truck driving (i.e. local, long haul, tanker, hazardous materials, dump truck, cab over, conventional, etc.).DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Student centered teaching approach. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Ability to operate flexibly and prioritize competing demands while maintaining a positive demeanor. Self-motivated and ability to work independently.
