JOB SUMMARY
To assist students with participating in extra-curricular events to achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline, and an increased level of self-esteem.
  • Extracurricular/Interscholastic Physical Education Credit Options
  • Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year , Pocahontas County Schools, in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 2510, will allow students to fulfill the one (1) graduation requirement credit for physical education ("P.
E.") beyond taking the required physical education ("P.E.") class. The alternative option for physical education ("P.E.") is as follows:
Class Title:
Extracurricular/Interscholastic Physical Education Non-Graded (Pass/Fail) (WVEIS #7948). This option allows the student to earn the high school Physical Education credit using an extracurricular/interscholastic activity. The course must be transcribed as non-graded after a student has successfully completed two (2) seasons of a WVSSAC-approved activity. If the student does not maintain a good academic standing, or if attendance is not satisfactory, the student will not receive their non-graded Physical Education credit and will have to complete the course at Pocahontas County High School during the school day. This option is non-GPA bearing, meaning that it will not add quality points to a student's transcript. Pocahontas County School's WVSSAC extracurricular/interscholastic approved activities: marching band, all athletics (baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, softball, soccer , track).
HEAD COACHES
are responsible for completing the Embedded Credit form(s) and submitting to the counselor.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities:
Follow established laws, rules, policies and regulations (county, state, WVSSAC) regarding athletics. Communicate appropriately with student athletes, coaching staff, parents and the educational community. Implement fundamental sports skills and sports management systems.
Additionally:
  • Cooperate with the building principal and athletic director.
  • Develop rapport with coaching staff within the school.
  • Organize coaching staff if head coach; assist Head Coach if assistant; manage staff
  • Develop positive relationships with student body, faculty, parents, community.
  • Develop positive relationships with game officials, news media
  • Develop a positive relationship with opposing teams/coaches/community.
  • Employ appropriate conduct during practices and games.
  • Attend league, conference, and WVSSAC meetings.
  • Participate in activities that foster professional growth and development.
  • Motivate staff and players toward desired goals, and command respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, and language.
  • Manage athletic injuries.
  • Care for equipment.
  • Supervise participants and discipline athletes/team appropriately.
  • Design quality organization of practice sessions.
  • Manage/facilitate pre-season planning and end-of-season procedures
  • Manage budget.
  • Follow purchasing procedures.
  • Initiate game organizational skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
