Job Description

Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice Barton College - Wilson, NC 27893 Apply Apply Description Barton College is seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice Sciences with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. The successful candidate will lead a range of Criminology courses at all levels of undergraduate and graduate course work, with a mix of seated and online/hybrid courses. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to teaching students in a liberal arts setting. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student recruitment, maintaining a program of active student engagement, meaningful participation in the life of the School of Education & Social Sciences and Barton College, and a commitment to active contributions in the profession. These contributions may include mentoring of student projects and development of pedagogy that engages students and fosters deep learning. Essential Functions. Teach up to 24 (twenty-four) credit hours annually of undergraduate plus graduate coursework. Sustain currency and relevancy through professional engagement and/or research related to professional background and experience. Mentor and advise students. Serve as an active faculty member of the Barton College School of Education & Social Sciences. Support student recruitment including participation at on-campus open houses. Display strong communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds. Work Environment. Work is performed in classrooms, offices, and virtual environments, including contact with students, faculty, staff, parents, service providers, and vendors. Qualifications A Ph.D. or ABD in the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice Sciences who is qualified to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. Special interests and experience in teaching other subjects compatible with the Criminology and Criminal Justice Sciences Program and the needs of the College will be considered during the candidate assessment process. A demonstrated ability to deliver applied learning experiences. Demonstration of excellence in teaching. Ability to lead a wide range of Criminology/Criminal Justice Sciences courses. Under the direction of the dean, develop curriculum for new programs and curricular revisions. Collaborative disposition with a commitment to service. Proficiency in oral presentation skills, planning, and organizing of course objectives.
