• The Department of Film and Media Studies at Hunter College, CUNY, seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Film History and Analysis to join our department in Fall 2026.

We seek a candidate whose research and scholarship contributes to the core undergraduate curriculum and who has experience teaching introductory lecture courses in film studies and history. Field of specialization is open, but we especially encourage applicants with expertise in film/media aesthetics, history and theory, national cinemas, transnational/regional/diasporic/global cinemas, authorship studies, genre, and/or documentary cinemas. Any field of specialization must be in dialogue with histories and practices beyond those areas. The Department of Film & Media Studies has approximately 650 majors. Our undergraduate film program consists of two tracks. One is fully analytical, while the second is a production track with half of the requirements in film history and analysis. We currently offer courses in both broad and focused histories of cinema, on directors, national cinemas, genre, issues of cinematic form, and courses devoted to issues of gender, race and sexuality. A number of our courses are cross-listed with the department's Media Studies program. We are seeking candidates interested in contributing to and innovating on our current offerings, as well as providing students stimulating experiences in relation to film culture and production. The department is also home to a dynamic MFA program in Integrated Media Arts. Responsibilities for this position would include: teaching our introductory Film 101 course, a large lecture class taken by students from other disciplines besides film majors, as well as supervising adjunct faculty leading discussion sections. Additional responsibilities could include advising honors projects, mentoring a diverse student body, and participating in other service to the department and college. The workload is 18 assignable hours per year, which is typically a 3-3 course load. • QUALIFICATIONS

• A PhD in Film Studies, or another field with a body of research related to film, is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully at the college level, an active research agenda and publications, and the interest and ability to contribute to the department and the greater college community.

• COMPENSATION

• Compensation is commensurate with experience within the range of $57,252
• 109,025.
