Position Information Position Information Posting Number F00357 Position Title Assistant Professor of Sociology (Tenure Track) Division Academic Affairs Division Department Name Sociology Department Position Type Faculty Position Overview The Department of Sociology at Rhode Island College invites applications for a versatile faculty member who can teach across the Sociology and Justice Studies programs with strong preference for those who can teach and supervise research in both areas. The successful candidate will offer introductory and upper‑level courses in theory, methods, and/or relevant electives. The role also includes contributing to the Justice Studies M.A. program, advising undergraduate and graduate students, maintaining an active research agenda, and engaging in departmental and college service. Experience with experiential learning, mentoring a diverse student population, and interdisciplinary collaboration is highly desirable. Essential Duties Teach Sociology courses serving the Sociology and Justice Studies programs, ranging from the introductory to the graduate level. Advise undergraduate and graduate students. Engage in scholarly research and professional activities. Participate in College and Departmental activities and committees. Occasional Duties Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Ability to teach required and elective courses in the Sociology and Justice Studies programs. Ability to engage in scholarly research and professional activities. Ability to contribute to the curricular, assessment, and advising work of the Department and its programs.

Required Qualifications Education:

Ph.D. in Sociology by time of appointment.

Experience:

Previous college-level teaching experience. Preferred Qualifications Ability to teach core courses in sociology, justice studies, and/or aging studies, including introductory courses, research methods, and/or classical and/or contemporary theory and/or theories of crime. Ability to teach a variety of courses across the current sociology and justice studies curricula and to complement current faculty expertise. A quantitative background is particularly desirable. Ability to teach graduate courses and supervise quantitative and/or criminal justice-related MA student research. Interest in and experience with active and experiential learning pedagogies. Experience working with and mentoring a diverse student population. Interest in contributing to interdisciplinary programs at the College, including the First-Year Seminar program. Willingness to adopt a leadership role. Interest in contributing to new Spanish bilingual RI court interpreter pipeline program. Environmental Conditions Teaching/instruction is performed in a traditional classroom setting, with the possibly of occasional online courses.
