Job Description

The Department of Religious Studies at Brown University is seeking a one-year visiting assistant professor specializing in the study of Islam in South Asia, to begin July 1, 2026. We are seeking a scholar with a primary focus on the Muslim communities, thought, or cultures in the Indian subcontinent. The candidate will be expected to teach three courses over the course of two semesters. For this position, Brown offers only the J-1 visa classification to scholars who need immigration sponsorship in order to enter the U.S. and commence lawful employment under the terms of their appointment. The department welcomes applicants with any specialization within South Asian Islam from the pre-modern to modern, and we are particularly interested in candidates whose work can engage with the broader historical, social, or literary contexts of the region. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach at least one survey course that extends into the contemporary era. Candidates should have PhD in hand by the time of appointment.
