Position Description Advertised Job Summary The University of South Carolina Sumter invites qualified candidates to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English position with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2026. The candidate must be willing and able to teach both lower- and upper-level undergraduate English courses in traditional and online settings. This is a 9-month, full-time position focused on teaching, research, and service. Candidates must possess a terminal degree in English or a related field from an accredited institution by the start date of employment, including credentials necessary for departmental approval to teach introductory and upper-level courses as needed. The successful candidate must have at least one academic year of full-time university-level teaching experience as an instructor of record by the start date of employment and should be prepared to demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate teaching and provide evidence of teaching effectiveness. Preferred qualifications:
Significant experience working with a student population similar to that of a regional or branch campus within a university system Significant experience across both traditional and dual enrollment environments Experience teaching creative writing Experience teaching in an ESL classroom (ESL credential not required) Academic advising experience, especially advising student-athletes and/or ESL students Courses will be taught either face-to-face or online. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours (four courses) per semester. Evidence of teaching effectiveness is required. Applicants must also demonstrate a strong commitment to establishing and maintaining professional activity in scholarship and service, including student advising, mentoring, and participation in the campus environment. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
