Site Description The Maya Angelou Academy at the DC Department of Corrections is an alternative school that serves incarcerated men and women aged 18-22 with individualized education plans. Located within the Central Treatment Facility, the school also supports students housed in the Central Detention Facility. Designed to meet the unique needs of justice-involved students requiring special education, the academy provides educational opportunities regardless of their academic history or current standing. Position Overview The Instructional Specialist has a critical role in the school by supporting each scholar in achieving their education goals through active support in the classrooms, both academically and behaviorally, in study halls, and in one-on-one tutoring assistance. Responsibilities Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: Designing and implementing curriculum including unit plans and assessments that are aligned both with Common Core standards and with the school-wide curricular framework at Maya Angelou Academy at DOC Developing and implementing age-appropriate, culturally responsive teaching practices Successfully using a backward design model in creating a curriculum with clear objectives and goals directly related to end-of-year benchmarks Assessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fit Creating a classroom and school environment that features a rich diversity of resources engages student interest, promotes student leadership, and stimulates student learning Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students Other duties as assigned Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education or subject field (required) Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain within 1 year of employment) Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred) Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies The Touchstone At the Maya Angelou Schools, the key to our success is rooted in building trusting, respectful and nurturing relationships with each other. Salary and Benefits Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.
