POSITION TITLE:
Special Education Coordinator
REPORTS TO
Director of Special Education
SUPERVISED BY
Director of Special Education
POSITION GOAL
To provide professional development, supervision, and coordination for special education programs and interpret these programs to school personnel, parents, and community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide professional development relating to the IEP process for district staff. 2. Provide professional development relating to special education initiatives and facilitation of related programs. 3. Coordinate the special education programs. 4. Participate in all case study conferences for students referred for evaluation. 5. Participate in the development of individualized education programs for students eligible for special services. 6. Work with school personnel to place students in special education classes according to state-approved procedures. 7. Coordinate and facilitate transportation services for special education students. 8. Assist in the selection, evaluation, and assignment of special education teachers. 9. Coordinate development, implementation, and revision of special education curriculum. 10. Ensure that all IEP procedures and annual reviews of students' individualized education programs are conducted within mandated timelines. 11. Supervise the implementation of entrance and exit of students according to adopted special education criteria. 12. Coordinate student/teacher programs. 13. Counsel parents of eligible students in securing necessary aid from various clinics and agencies. 14. Ensure that all federal and state guidelines for students with disabilities are met. 15. Assist in preparation of required state and federal reports. 16. Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by Director of Special Education or their designee.
KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS
1. Ability to create, develop, and implement professional development for staff 2. Knowledge of special education law 3. Ability to coordinate and work collaboratively with all stakeholders 4. Demonstrate strong communication and public relations skills 5. Ability to understand school reports and records
EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS
1. Valid Illinois Administrative certification (Type 75) required 2. 3 years of previous special education services or classroom experience required 3. Illinois LBS1 endorsement preferred 4. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and document work productivity 5. Familiarity with community agencies and services
