Who We Are:
Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 13,000 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9th – 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

What We Need:
The Literacy Coordinator will be the individual who will plan, organize, and implement a PreK-8 literacy program district-wide. The coordinator must provide strong instructional leadership and be able to successfully promote effective classroom teaching practices in the area of reading/language arts. This individual also must possess experience and knowledge in implementing balanced literacy within a school system. In addition, he or she must have strong communication and collaboration skills in order to successfully lead the implementation of a quality literacy program in our district.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate the development and implementation of a PreK-8 literacy program district-wide. Support the schools and teachers in the implementation of a common language of literacy pedagogy for all educators in the district. Lead vertical and horizontal teams of teachers through the development of a scope and sequence. Responsible for facilitating continuous improvement in classroom literacy instruction by providing instructional support to teachers in the areas of lesson design, aligning instruction with district curriculum, and developing effective classroom instruction and assessment. Create well-designed professional learning experiences that engage learners, link current information to previous knowledge or experiences in the area of literacy. Provide demonstration lessons in curriculum and teaching techniques for classroom teachers, support staff, and administrators. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to examine curriculum and instruction program effectiveness related to reading instruction. Assist in the preparation of the budget and administration of the budget for supplies, equipment, and facilities in related to the area of reading. Disseminate information regarding current research and significant developments on the state and national levels in reading. Provide leadership in implementing best practices and instructional strategies in the area of literacy, which meet the needs of diverse learners. Coordinate curriculum/program implementation with teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, and support staff. Observe classrooms around the district to assure that curriculum and programs related to literacy are being implemented with fidelity and to identify what additional support is needed. Research and identify best practices in the area of PreK-8 literacy instruction. Verify vertical alignment of curriculum and identify gaps/redundancies, if any. Pursue outside funding and grant opportunities. Provide staff members with appropriate continuous professional development. Collect, maintain, and report relevant data as required throughout the year. Provide leadership and effective communication with all stakeholders. Attend regular staff meetings and conduct regular staff meetings. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of PreK-8.
Qualifications:
Commitment to the belief that all children, regardless of circumstances, can achieve at high levels. Demonstrate ability to multitask effectively and prioritize strategically. Openness to feedback and willingness to take personal responsibility. Passion to embrace social and emotional standards and practices. Hold or be eligible for the required Illinois State Professional Educators License with a Administrative Endorsement (General Administrative or Principal), English Language Arts and/or reading endorsement. A minimum of three (3) years of successful elementary school teaching experience Preference will be given to those who demonstrate evidence of successful teaching and academic achievement using in the area of reading/language arts Be able to successfully work in a collaborative environment. Able to mediate and resolve conflicts. Ability to interact with teachers, parents, outside agencies, and central services staff.
