JOB SUMMARY.
The Reading Specialist in Mashpee Public Schools is responsible for accelerating student literacy outcomes through targeted intervention and by strengthening core (Tier 1) instruction through collaboration and support of classroom teachers. This role provides direct instruction to students individually and in small groups to develop essential literacy skills, while also serving as a literacy leader who supports the implementation of a comprehensive, evidence-based literacy program. This includes coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers and paraprofessionals in effective literacy assessment and instructional practices. As a teacher, the Reading Specialist is expected to provide rigorous, standards-aligned instruction to a diverse population of students; regularly assess student progress and adjust instruction to ensure growth; and create a learning environment that is responsive to the needs of all learners, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities. This role operates within the expectations of the Unit A contract and does not include formal evaluation of staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
(include but are not limited to): Instruction & Student Support Plan and deliver targeted, evidence-based literacy instruction aligned to district and state standards in individual, small group, and classroom settings Design and implement instructional plans based on assessment data; establish clear learning objectives and monitor student understanding Regularly assess student progress, provide timely feedback, and adjust instruction to ensure continued growth Support students in accessing grade-level curriculum, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities Create and maintain a learning environment that is inclusive, engaging, and responsive to diverse learning needs Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress and instructional strategies Contribute to a positive school culture and collaborative professional environment Data Analysis and MTSS Implementation Use multiple data sources (e.g., STAR, MCAS, QRI, classroom assessments) to identify student needs and inform instruction Develop and implement individualized or targeted literacy plans aligned to MTSS structures Actively participate in MTSS teams by contributing data analysis, recommending interventions, and monitoring student progress Maintain accurate records of student progress and intervention outcomes Use data to support instructional decision-making and communicate student progress with staff and families
Collaboration & Communication:
Collaboration & Professional Support Collaborate with classroom teachers to support the implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction within Tier 1 Provide job-embedded support such as modeling lessons, co-planning, and sharing instructional strategies Plan and facilitate professional development opportunities that strengthen instructional practices across the district. Share resources and strategies to support differentiation and access for all learners Collaborate with special educators, ESL staff, and other specialists to ensure coordinated support for students Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and strategies to support learning at home
Compliance & Curriculum:
Curriculum, Compliance & Professional Responsibilities Support the implementation of district literacy curriculum and initiatives Ensure compliance with applicable requirements (e.g., Title I, student plans, documentation) Promote high expectations for student achievement and equitable access to literacy instruction Attend and participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school-based teams Maintain professional competence through ongoing learning and application of best practices in literacy instruction Utilize instructional technology and innovative practices to enhance student learning The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this classification.
