This position combines technical expertise, instructional responsibilities, and collaborative engagement with students, faculty, and staff. The role includes managing the day-to-day operations of the Makerspace, maintaining equipment, supporting project-based learning across disciplines, and teaching 1-2 hands-on courses per semester in fabrication, design, or related applied technologies. This position plays a vital role in promoting experiential learning and innovation that align with the missions of the community college. Examples of Duties Makerspace Operations and Technical Oversight Supervise daily operations of the Makerspace labs, ensuring all users follow proper safety protocols. Manage scheduling systems and coordinate access for students, classes, and community partnerships. Train and oversee student workers and faculty on equipment use and safety procedures. Maintain equipment, tools, and materials; perform minor repairs and coordinate external service when needed. Monitor and manage supply inventories, budget allocations, and procurement for lab equipment. Develop and enforce Makerspace policies for safe and efficient operation. Assist students and faculty with prototyping, design layout, fabrication, and digital workflows. Collaborate with instructional departments to integrate Makerspace into coursework and college-wide initiatives. Support project-based and applied learning activities across technical, art, and general education programs. Communicate regularly with the supervisor regarding facility needs, safety concerns, and improvement opportunities. Teaching and Instructional Responsibilities Teach 1-2 courses per semester in fabrication, design, applied technology, or related disciplines such as: Introduction to Fabrication and MS equipment Fabrication Techniques Materials and Processes for Makers An existing CE or CU course in one of the college's existing pathways that the coordinator is qualified to teach. Develop course syllabi, assignments, and assessments aligned with departmental and institutional learning outcomes. Provide demonstrations and lectures on technical processes, safety, and creative problem-solving. Mentor students in individual or collaborative design and fabrication projects. Contribute to curriculum development to expand Makerspace-related course offerings. Support integration of Makerspace tools and resources into other academic programs (e.g., engineering, art, trades, or business). Administrative and Collaborative Duties Participate in department meetings, campus committees, and professional development activities. Maintain safety documentation, training records, and equipment maintenance logs. Collaborate with college partners to promote Makerspace as a hub for community innovation, continuing education, and workforce training. Support outreach events, open houses, and exhibitions showcasing student and community projects. Assist with grant writing, industry partnerships, and other initiatives that expand Makerspace capacity and impact. Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree in Skilled Trade, Art, Engineering or a related field.
Work Experience :
1-3 years of work experience in a related field, in a hands-on learning lab, or Maker Space and teaching experience. Supplemental Information Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated experience working in a skilled trade, sculpture, fabrication, or makerspace environment. Proven ability to troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on wood, metal, and digital fabrication equipment. Knowledge of health and safety regulations for workshops and laboratories, with a commitment to fostering a culture of safety. Proficiency in one or more of the following: woodworking, metalworking, construction techniques, mechanics, or digital fabrication processes (CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting). Experience teaching or mentoring students in technical or creative disciplines. Ability to communicate clearly with diverse learners and colleagues. Strong organizational skills, including project tracking, scheduling, and resource management. Commitment to supporting an inclusive and accessible learning environment. Normal Working Hours A minimum of 40-hour work week is determined by the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours.
