Job Description

Special Education CoordinatorOverview Rio Grande Academy of Fine Arts (RioGAFA) is seeking a passionate, student-centered, and highly organized Special Education Coordinator to lead and strengthen our special education program. The Special Education Coordinator serves as a key member of the school leadership team, ensuring that students with disabilities receive high-quality services in inclusive learning environments while maintaining full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position combines instructional leadership, program management, staff coaching, compliance oversight, and family engagement. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem-solver who believes all students can achieve at high levels and is committed to building systems that support student growth, belonging, and success. ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership & Compliance Lead the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the school's special education program. Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, New Mexico Public Education Department requirements, and all applicable federal and state regulations. Monitor timelines, documentation, evaluations, service delivery, and procedural safeguards to ensure legal compliance. Maintain accurate records and prepare reports for audits, monitoring visits, and state reporting requirements. Collaborate with administration to develop systems that promote effective and compliant special education services. Student Support & IEP Management Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Facilitate IEP meetings and collaborate with families, staff, related service providers, and outside agencies. Support evaluation and re-evaluation processes, eligibility determinations, and transition planning. Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and assist teams in making data-driven instructional decisions. Ensure students receive services in the least restrictive environment and have access to meaningful inclusion opportunities. Instructional Leadership Coach and support special education teachers, educational assistants, and general education staff in implementing evidence-based instructional practices. Partner with teachers to develop accommodations, modifications, behavior supports, and intervention plans. Provide professional development related to inclusive practices, differentiated instruction, behavior support, and special education compliance. Collaborate with school leadership to strengthen MTSS systems and support student achievement. Family & Community Partnerships Build positive relationships with families and serve as a resource throughout the special education process. Facilitate clear and timely communication regarding student services, progress, and supports. Coordinate with community agencies, service providers, and support organizations to ensure students and families have access to necessary resources. Program Operations Manage special education budgets, grants, contracts, and resource allocation. Coordinate scheduling of services, evaluations, and related service providers. Recruit, interview, train, supervise, and evaluate special education personnel. Participate in leadership meetings, school events, showcases, and family engagement activities. Support school-wide initiatives that promote equity, inclusion, and student success. QualificationsRequired Valid New Mexico Special Education Teaching License. Minimum of three years of successful experience in special education. Demonstrated knowledge of
IDEA, IEP
development, evaluation processes, and compliance requirements. Experience leading meetings and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Preferred New Mexico Administrative License or willingness to pursue administrative licensure. Experience serving in a special education leadership, coordinator, instructional coach, or case management role. Experience with MTSS, inclusion models, and behavior intervention systems. Experience managing budgets, grants, or special education program resources. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. Skills & Competencies Exceptional leadership and team-building skills. Strong understanding of special education law, compliance, and best practices. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously. Skilled in data analysis and using student performance data to drive decisions. Effective facilitator of difficult conversations and collaborative problem-solving. Commitment to equity, inclusion, and high expectations for all students. Strong written communication skills for reports, compliance documentation, and family communication. Pay:
$60,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
