Job Description
The mission of the SC Commission for the Blind (SCCB), established in 1966, is to provide quality individualized vocational rehabilitation services, independent living services, and prevention-of-blindness services to South Carolinians who are blind or low vision leading to competitive employment and social and economic independence. Our goal is to become a national model vocational rehabilitation agency for people who are blind or low vision, demonstrating quality services, accountability, innovation, effectiveness and efficiency. We are seeking a passionate individual interested in developing foundational and advanced skills in blindness rehabilitation, beginning with Braille literacy and expanding into additional core areas (technology, home management, and Orientation & Mobility exposure). This role is ideal for candidates seeking a career in blindness rehabilitation, education, or human services and provides a pathway toward advanced training, certification, or instructional roles. This position supports instructional staff in delivering high-quality training to individuals who are blind or visually impaired while actively developing their own competency in blindness skills. The position emphasizes learning through structured training, observation, guided practice, and supervised instruction, beginning with Braille and expanding into other core training areas. Duties may include, but are not limited to: Participating in structured training to develop Braille literacy skills, including reading and writing Unified English Braille (UEB). Assisting instructors with lesson preparation, material organization, and classroom setup. Supporting reinforcement of Braille skills through guided practice sessions with consumers under supervision. Observing and gradually assisting in instructional delivery across core training areas (Braille, technology, home management, and Orientation & Mobility exposure). Documenting learning progress and training activities as required. Maintaining instructional materials, including Braille resources and equipment. Reinforcing Training Center expectations related to safety, professionalism, and independence. Participating in team meetings, professional development, and ongoing training opportunities. Demonstrating measurable progress in Braille proficiency and other assigned skill areas.
State:
A high school diploma and administrative experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.Agency:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university OR substitutable experience.Additional Requirements:
Ability to read and write Braille (to be developed within role). Ability to participate in structured training and demonstrate measurable progress. Willingness to engage in hands-on learning and skill demonstration. Ability to support instructional environments and reinforce learning expectations. Strong interest in blindness rehabilitation, education, or human services. Willingness to learn Braille and other blindness skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Effective communication skills and professional demeanor. Interest in continued professional development or certification pathways. Background in education, psychology, rehabilitation, social work, or related field preferred. Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
