Primary Purpose:
The Special Education Specialist promotes educator growth, high-quality instruction, and inclusive practices across special education programs. The position provides coaching to special educators and supports collaboration with general educators.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsement(s)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Strong understanding of specially designed instruction and differentiation strategies Strong knowledge of IEP development, goal writing, and progress monitoring Skilled in behavior supports, inclusive practices, and classroom management systems Ability to facilitate adult learning and deliver targeted professional development Skilled in using student data to guide instructional planning and monitor progress and instructional impact Strong skills in modeling instruction and providing feedback Deep understanding of instructional decision-making in special education settings
Experience:
Minimum 5+ years of effective special education teaching experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Observe classroom instruction and provide constructive feedback Provide in-class coaching for specialized classes Model effective special education instruction in real classroom settings Provide job-embedded coaching with a focus on measurable instructional goals Coach teachers on aligning: Daily instruction with IEP goals Service minutes with meaningful instruction Progress monitoring with instructional planning Provide targeted support for: Ensuring instruction reflects what is written in the IEP Writing goals that are instructionally usable Collecting data during instruction Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, service providers, and families to support student success Support the implementation of state standards by developing teacher understanding of
TEKS, DISD
curriculum, and instructional practices Assist teachers in creating instructional environments that promote independence, engagement, and self-regulation Design and deliver professional learning on topics such as specially designed instruction, IEP development and implementation, data-driven instruction, and compliance Facilitate parent training as needed Assist teachers in preparing paperwork for ARD meetings to ensure compliance Assist teachers in planning and aligning instruction to TEKS while differentiating instruction for all students Assist in developing alternate assessments for students that are on an alternate curriculum Assist teachers in developing a grading system for students on an alternate curriculum Other Participate in professional development opportunities to improve skills related to job responsibilities Act in a professional manner and maintain a professional attitude towards the public and colleagues Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information; adhere to chain of command Maintain professional appearance as appropriate for job responsibilities Observe professional and ethical standards, in accordance with TEA Perform other duties as assigned by
