Full Job Description Academic Specialist Reports To:
Campus Principal and Director of Instructional Strategies Contract Days:
192 days per year (187-day teacher calendar plus 5 additional days in summer
FLSA Status:
Exempt (Professional) Position Summary The Academic Specialist serves a dual role focused on improving student outcomes and strengthening instructional practice across the campus. For approximately half of each instructional day, the Academic Specialist provides targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 academic interventions to students. For the remaining portion of the day, the Academic Specialist serves as an instructional coach, partnering with teachers to improve classroom practice, analyze student data, and implement high-impact instructional strategies. This position is designed to directly support both student achievement and teacher growth. Because this position requires teaching at least 4 hours per day, this is a TIA-eligible position and is coded as 087 for the PEIMS role. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Student Support (Approximately 50%) ? Provide targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction aligned to campus and district instructional priorities. ? Use data from universal screeners, formative assessments, and progress monitoring tools to identify students in need of intervention. ? Design and implement evidence-based intervention plans tailored to individual student needs. ? Monitor and document student progress, adjusting instructional strategies as needed to ensure growth. ? Collaborate with classroom teachers, intervention teams, and campus leadership to align intervention efforts with core instruction. ? Maintain accurate records of interventions, progress monitoring, and student outcomes. Instructional Coaching (Approximately 50%) ? Serve as an instructional coach for teachers, supporting effective instructional planning, delivery, and assessment. ? Model best practices in instruction, classroom management, and differentiation. ? Conduct coaching cycles that may include goal-setting, classroom observations, feedback conversations, and reflective practice. ? Support teachers in analyzing student data to inform instructional decisions. ? Collaborate with campus leadership to support new teachers and teachers in need of targeted instructional support. ? Facilitate professional learning, including small-group training or job-embedded coaching aligned to campus improvement goals. ? Promote a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and professional growth. ? Other duties as assigned. Collaboration and Communication ? Work closely with campus administrators to align intervention and coaching efforts with campus goals. ? Partner with the Director of Instructional Strategies to ensure consistency and fidelity to district instructional frameworks. ? Communicate effectively with teachers regarding student progress, instructional strategies, and coaching goals. ? Participate in campus and district meetings, professional learning, and planning sessions as required. Qualifications Required Qualifications ? Minimum of three (3) full years as a teacher of-record. ? Demonstrated evidence of strong student outcomes and academic growth. ? Valid Texas teaching certificate (or appropriate state certification). Preferred Qualifications ? Teaching experience at both the elementary and middle school levels. ? Master's degree in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field. ? Prior experience with instructional coaching, intervention programs, or data-driven instruction. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ? Deep understanding of effective instructional practices and intervention strategies. ? Strong data-analysis skills and ability to translate data into actionable instructional plans. ? Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. ? Ability to build trusting, professional relationships with teachers and campus leaders. ? Skilled in providing constructive feedback and facilitating reflective conversations. ? Strong organizational and time-management skills to balance student intervention and coaching responsibilities. ? Commitment to equity and meeting the needs of diverse learners.
