BACKGROUND
The Giant Magellan Telescope is one of the most powerful ground-based telescopes ever engineered. It is designed to push the boundaries of human knowledge and explore the unknown. Now under construction at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile's Atacama Desert, one of the premier locations on Earth for astronomy, the telescope will deliver the highest-performing combination of image quality, field of view, and light sensitivity ever achieved. From this southern hemisphere location, the Giant Magellan Telescope will use seven of the world's largest mirrors to uncover the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, investigate the origins of chemical elements, and search for signs of life on distant exoplanets. When complete in the 2030s, the Giant Magellan Telescope will be one of the largest public-private funded science projects in history. It is the work of the GMTO Corporation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and international research consortium, founded by 16 universities and research institutions from the United States, Chile, Australia, Brazil, Israel, South Korea, and Taiwan. The Education and Public Engagement Programs Coordinator (US) will support in developing, managing and implementing a broad portfolio of educational programs and public engagement initiatives that connect diverse audiences ranging from K-12, undergraduate and graduate students and the general public to the science and mission of the Giant Magellan Telescope. This role is responsible for coordinating public-facing events, managing community and institutional partnerships for program development, and supporting the project management of National Science Foundation (NSF) Broader Impacts grants. The Coordinator will work collaboratively across GMTO teams and with external partners to ensure that education outreach and broader societal impacts programming is aligned with the organization's mission and strategic goals. This position plays a key role in expanding public understanding of and excitement for astronomy, science, and the GMT's transformative contributions to humanity's knowledge of the universe. This role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent initiatives in a dynamic, collaborative environment.JOB DUTIES
Support the design, development, and implementation educational programs and projects for a range of audiences including K-12 students, educators, university partners, and the general public. Plan, coordinate, and execute public engagement events, and track and report on event participation, reach and outcomes. Coordinate logistics, materials, and staffing for outreach activities in collaboration with internal teams and external partners. Serve as a primary point of contact for partner organizations and manage ongoing relationships for education and outreach programming. Maintain partnerships with schools, universities, museums, science centers, community organizations, and other stakeholders Support the development, submission, and reporting of NSF Broader Impacts grant proposals and awards. Support tracking and documentation of program impact and outcomes for reporting purposes Manage grant deliverables, timelines, and budgets in coordination with the EPO Manager Qualifications (Required) Bachelor's degree in Education, Science Communication, Astronomy, Physics, a related STEM field, or equivalent experience Minimum of 3 years of experience in science education, informal education, public outreach, or a related field Experience coordinating events, programs, or initiatives with multiple stakeholders Experience with program and project metric monitoring including monitoring budgets, key performance indicators and outcomes Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific concepts for general audiences Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, and community stakeholders spanning the Giant Magellan's international consortium. Qualifications (Preferred) Background or demonstrated interest in astronomy, astrophysics, or related physical sciences, or science education Experience with NSF grant processes, Broader Impacts requirements, grant writing, management, or reporting Familiarity with evaluation methodologies for education and outreach programs Experience working in a research institution, science museum, observatory, or similar environment. Experience with project management tools including Asana, Slack and OneDrive Proficiency in SpanishWORKING CONDITIONS
