Job Description

Established in 1994, Nauticus is a maritime discovery center that hosts 350,000 visitors annually and is home to the Nauticus Museum, Sail Nauticus sailing center, Schooner Virginia, the Battleship Wisconsin and the Half Moone Cruise Terminal. Nauticus' mission is to benefit the community through education, impactful experiences and by sharing access to maritime resources. The City of Norfolk's Maritime Center, Nauticus, is currently seeking an Education Specialist. The Education Specialist is responsible for conducting programs at Nauticus' campus and around the region to increase the public's knowledge and understanding of maritime themes. Work will involve presenting education programs both on and off campus as well as researching and developing programs.
Department Starting Hiring Salary:
$45,444.51 The Education Specialist will: Conduct public presentations for school groups both on and offsite Engage with the museum visitors through formal programming and informal interactions Collaborate with other educators to assess current programs Have opportunities for program development Assist with promotion and execution of education programs and events Essential functions will include, but are not limited to: Serving as the coordinator of the Maritime Programs within the Educator Department including, Stem to Stern and Sail Academy, by being responsible for content and delivery of the components of the programs Led cohort of students through the afterschool Sail Academy program from mid-September to mid-May Present STEM and history programs to diverse audiences, including but not limited to school groups, family groups, special youth groups, teachers, and the public including the set up for programs, events, and activities Perform interactive education program including floor programs, workshops, summer camp and special events Act as a liaison for the 3 rd floor Discovery Museum ensuring all spaces are opened or closed appropriately and informing of potential issues through the appropriate channels Assist visitors with special needs, questions, or complaints in a courteous and responsible manner Under the direction of the Education Manager, research and develop program curriculum to meet national and state standards for science, math and history with a focus on STEM concepts using a cross-curricular approach Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the public Ability to stand for extended periods of time, life from ground to above the shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity Other duties as assigned Work requires broad knowledge in a general profession or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. One year in the guest relations field. Previous experience in formal or informal education environments preferred.

Work Hours:
Sunday - Thursday, 8:45am - 5:15pm, 40 hours per week. Weekends, holidays, evenings may be required. Schedule will adjust based on programming.
