Part-time Position Summary:
The Aquatic Exercise Instructor delivers high-quality, safe, and engaging aquatic programming for participants of all ages and abilities — from infants and young children to older adults with chronic conditions. This role supports the YMCA's mission by creating a welcoming, inclusive environment that promotes health, wellness, and lifelong physical development. Instructors lead a diverse range of classes including youth swim lessons, parent-and-child programs, and adult aquatic fitness, and must consistently uphold the professionalism, values, and child safety standards of the YMCA of Madison County.Core Program Responsibilities:
Program / Description /Intensity:
Youth Swim Lessons:
Structured skill-based instruction for children across beginner through advanced levels. Follows YMCA swim lesson curriculum with individualized progress tracking and parent communication. Low-Mod Intensity Parent & Me /Tot Swim:
Caregiver-accompanied aquatic introduction for infants and toddlers (typically 6 months-3 years). Focuses on water acclimation, safety, and bonding through guided play and movement.Low Intensity Aquanastics:
Promotes strength, mobility, flexibility, circulation, and relaxation. No swimming skills required, suitable for a wide range of abilities. LowMod Intensity Aqua Arthritis:
Gentle, therapeutic, joint-friendly exercises designed for individuals with arthritis or mobility limitations. Evidence- based programming approach.
Low Intensity Silver Splash:
Low-to-moderate intensity class for older adults improving agility, flexibility, endurance, balance, and coordination. Low•Mod Intensity Aqua Fitness:
Full-body aerobic workout incorporating flexibility and resistance training for general adult participants.Mod-High Intensity Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Instruction & Program Delivery:
Lead safe, structured aquatic classes across all assigned programs, including youth swim lessons, Parent & Me, and adult fitness classes. Follow YMCA-approved curriculum and skill progressions for each program type, adapting lesson plans to participant needs. Adapt instruction for a wide range of ages, abilities, fitness levels, and physical limitations, including participants with disabilities or chronic conditions. Demonstrate proper aquatic techniques and exercises clearly and safely from poolside or in the water as appropriate. Manage class dynamics effectively, maintaining appropriate behavior and engagement for all age groups, including young children.Youth & Family Programs:
Assess and document individual swimmer skill levels and maintain progress records for all youth swim lesson participants. Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers regarding participant progress, goals, and any concerns observed during class. Provide a nurturing, encouraging environment that builds children's confidence in the water while upholding all child protection standards. Follow all mandatory reporting protocols and YMCA child safety policies without exception.Safety & Facility:
Maintain vigilant awareness of pool safety at all times and respond swiftly and calmly to emergencies. Ensure aquatic equipment is used appropriately, stored correctly, and maintained in good condition. Conduct pre-class safety checks of the pool area, equipment, and participant-to-instructor ratios. Adhere to all YMCA aquatic safety standards, policies, and local health regulations.Administrative & Professional:
Track and accurately record class attendance for all programs. Assist with program promotion, registration support, and member retention efforts as needed. Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and certification renewal sessions. Represent the YMCA mission and core values — caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility — through professional conduct and positive member service at all times.Schedule & Availability:
This is a part-time, hourly position. Class schedules vary by program type: Youth swim lessons and Parent & Me classes typically run on weekday mornings/afternoons and Saturday mornings Adult aquatic fitness classes (Silver Splash, Aqua Arthritis, Aquanastics, Aqua Fitness) are primarily scheduled on weekday mornings Availability for at least two weekday mornings and one weekend morning per week is strongly preferred Mandatory staff training and certification sessions will be scheduled in advanceYMCA Core Values:

Qualifications & Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum age: 18 years (required for roles involving unsupervised work with minors) Strong swimming ability and demonstrated comfort leading activity in and around the water CPR/AED & First Aid certification inclusive of child and infant CPR, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire Successful completion of a criminal background check prior to first day of work Completion of YMCA Mandatory Reporter / Child Abuse Prevention training prior to working with youth (training provided) Must meet all YMCA Aquatic Instructor training and onboarding requirements (training provided)Preferred Qualifications:
YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification Prior experience teaching youth swim lessons, Parent & Me, or similar caregiver-child aquatic programs Experience instructing group fitness or therapeutic aquatic programs (Aqua Arthritis, Silver Splash, or equivalent) Experience working with older adults, individuals with physical limitations, or special populations Demonstrated skill in parent/caregiver communication and developmental progress reportingPhysical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to perform the following on a regular basis: Stand, walk, and remain poolside for the duration of class sessions (typically 30-60 minutes) Enter and move in the water to assist, demonstrate, or support participants as needed Physically assist or support participants (including children and older adults) safely in and around the pool Demonstrate aquatic exercises and swim techniques with proper form Lift and carry aquatic equipment and supplies (up to 30 lbs.) Respond quickly and physically to pool emergencies, including performing water rescues and CPRSimilar remote jobs
