Job Description

Job Description:
Ohio University's School of Dance seeks a faculty member with expertise in contemporary dance practices, dance composition, dance pedagogy, and global dance forms. We are looking for an active dance artist-educator who will embrace our mission of building a welcoming community and encouraging critical dialogue through practice and performance to prepare students to be dance innovators for the 21st century. The successful candidate will have experience teaching studio courses in dance composition, modern/contemporary dance techniques, and dance pedagogy. Preference will be given to candidates whose studio practice integrates contemporary global forms, including African diasporic dance forms, and who have experience teaching dance appreciation with a global focus. We also welcome areas of expertise such as dance ethnography, movement analysis, jazz, ballet, or somatic practices. The School of Dance is a fully accredited institutional member of NASD . We offer a BFA in Dance Performance and Choreography, an MA in Community Dance, three dance minors, and two certificate programs. The School of Dance is comprised of six full-time faculty and staff who support over 100 students in our dance programs. This is a nine-month appointment beginning on August 16, 2026. This position may be renewable up to three years depending on performance and funding.
Responsibilities:
Teaching:
Teach undergraduate courses in dance, including multiple levels of dance composition, contemporary/modern dance techniques, dance pedagogy, dance ethnography, and other relevant courses. Choreograph for student performers in our mainstage dance concert: Contribute to curriculum development that reflects current professional standards and evolving practices
Program and Institutional Service:
Participate in recruitment, admissions, and audition processes for BFA applicants Advise and mentor undergraduate students on academic progress and career pathways Collaborate with faculty, staff, and production leadership on concert planning and scheduling Contribute to service at the School, College, and University levels This position may require days, nights, and weekends, including, but not limited to, technical and dress rehearsals. Hours required as dictated by academic and production schedules. Optional summer teaching or administrative opportunities are available in the Summer Dance Intensive, part of the College of Fine Arts Summer Programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
MA or MFA terminal degree in performance or choreography, or closely related field by the start date of appointment or may request approval for consideration using the equivalent or tested experience outlined in Ohio University policy 18.001 .
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching dance technique and composition in higher education Demonstrated ability to choreograph for a variety of dance productions Professional experience in contemporary dance Knowledge of contemporary pedagogical practices Teaching experience in a BFA dance program Effective collaborative, organizational, and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff Demonstrative ability to mentor students from a range of backgrounds, including international students Experience in global contemporary forms, especially African diasporic dance Experience teaching dance pedagogy, dance ethnography, dance appreciation, or related courses
