Job Description
Instructors are responsible for delivering high-quality programs for youth, adults, and families. They plan, organize, and lead classes, workshops, camps, and activities within their area of expertise (e.g., fitness, sports, arts, STEM, enrichment). Instructors are expected to foster an engaging, safe, and inclusive environment that aligns with the department's mission and reflects community values.

Compensation varies based on the instructional area(s) and the level of experience required to teach specific classes or workshops.Job Duties:
Plan, coordinate, and deliver assigned recreation programs, classes, workshops, and/or camps. Provide instruction and guidance to participants of varying ages, abilities, and skill levels. Communicate program expectations and enforce safety rules and appropriate conduct. Adapt activities and instructional approaches to meet diverse participant needs. Maintain active supervision of participants to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Set up, operate, and maintain program equipment and materials as needed. Respond to incidents and provide basic first aid in accordance with established procedures. Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with participants, families, and staff. Attend and participate in required trainings and meetings. Perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Demonstrated flexibility, positive attitude, enthusiasm, and strong problem-solving skills. Experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Knowledge and experience in the related area of instruction or activity. Ability to interact effectively with participants of all ages in a positive, respectful, and courteous manner. Ability to instruct, teach, and coach participants in a professional and supportive manner. Ability to follow and implement established lesson plans or program outlines, with the ability to adapt as needed. Ability to modify instructional approaches to meet diverse learning styles and abilities. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers. Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and decision-making skills, particularly in safety-related situations. Basic organizational skills to manage equipment, materials, and class activities. Commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment for all participants. Demonstrated punctuality, reliability, and strong work ethic. Ability to comply with agency policies, procedures, and training requirements. Ability to meet the physical requirements of recreational programming and activities.Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
Must be able to safely perform the essential physical functions of the position, including the full range of physical activities required by assigned programs, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to recognize and respond to auditory and visual distress signals in a variety of environments, with safety as a primary consideration. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, grasp, push, pull, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, and jump as required by program activities. Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Work may be performed in indoor and/or outdoor environments in varying weather conditions. May be required to work in environments with moderate to high activity levels and noise. Must be able to maintain active supervision of participants for extended periods. May be required to respond quickly to emergent situations to ensure participant safety.Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire; and Significant experience in the related area of activity and passion for sharing skills; and Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with participants of varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds; and Ability to help maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive environment.Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with or leading groups. Availability to work flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, or as needed.Other Qualifications:
CPR, AED, and First Aid training or have the ability to obtain this training within 6 months of hire (City will provide training).Criminal Background Screening:
This position may involve access to facilities, worksites, or environments where vulnerable adults and/or minors are present. To help ensure the safety of those individuals, employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check. Background screenings will be conducted only after a conditional offer of employment has been made and will comply with applicable laws, including the Washington Fair Chance Act.
