Until Filled New Canaan Public Schools Assistant Director of Multilingual Learners Job Description The Assistant Director of Multilingual Learners (ML) is a proactive, self-directed teacher leader who is able to diagnose, plan, and deliver high-quality, targeted, and individualized instruction to students who are acquiring English. The Assistant Director of MLs serves as a resource, coaching classroom teachers on how to instruct and support our ML population within the general education environment.

They are essential to supporting and guiding our team of ML tutors and families, and are responsible for independently planning, executing, and managing LAS Links testing.
Responsibilities:
Operates with high autonomy to manage a traveling schedule, proactively enacting ML programming across the district and ensuring all state and district guidelines are met. Applies deep knowledge of content, pedagogy, and cultural norms to teach Multilingual Learners in listening, reading, writing, and speaking, providing direct instruction when necessary. Creates outcome-based intervention plans that sequence and scaffold learning, demonstrating a curious approach to finding new ways to maximize growth for ML students K-12. Collaborates with K-12 teachers to help them enact best practices and support ML students within the general education classroom. Leads the onboarding and transition of Multilingual students and families who are new to New Canaan, serving as a compassionate advocate for their needs. Effectively selects and designs powerful assessment tools; uses critical thinking to respond to data by revising plans and regrouping students in ML tutors' schedules. Effectively communicates student progress to families and school leaders, and provides translation services (in-person, documents, over the phone) upon request. Trains and supervises ML tutors to help support students both inside and outside of the general education classroom. Attends SST and PPT meetings to lend expert perspective on the progress of Multilingual Learners. Independently completes and maintains LAS Links screening; creates, maintains, and oversees ML accommodation plans and state-mandated testing. Collaboratively designs and leads professional learning sessions for leaders, teachers, and staff on best practices for supporting Multilingual Learners. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Has specific knowledge of best practices in teaching explicit decoding and/or language comprehension. Demonstrates a proven ability to be flexible with regard to schedule and traveling independently across schools. Possesses a self-starter mentality with a high level of personal organization and the ability to enact programming. Demonstrates curiosity by sharing resources, learning new intervention techniques, and possessing a willingness to coach and teach other adults. Communicates excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to advocate for the tools and techniques that work for Multilingual Learners. Supports a positive school-wide culture by interacting with families and communities and reinforcing behavioral expectations across the district. Conversational Spanish or Mandarin fluency preferred, but not required.
Qualifications/Certifications:
Valid CT teaching certification w/ESOL Certification preferred; willingness to add ESOL Certification. Minimum two years of teaching experience.
