Job Description

Supervisor Physical Education and Health PreK-12 essential functions of the position with or without reasonableaccommodations.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of effective curricular and instructional practices.
  • Knowledge of data collection, analysis and program evaluation.
  • Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
Essential Functions:
The Supervisor of PreK-12 Physical Education and Health has primary responsibility for the development,implementation, and evaluation of curriculum that supports FCPS instructional goals and objectives, as well asthe provision of instructional support services to teachers and principals.

Reporting directly to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Supervisor of Physical Education and Health,performs the following duties:

Develop, implement, and evaluate curriculum.
  • Provides districtwide leadership for PreK-12 curriculum conce in physical education and health, andits alignment to state standards.
  • Serves as the districtwide lead for the Maryland State Department of Education in physical education andhealth.
  • Coordinates student enrichment programming in physical education
  • Facilitates the Board of Education's Family Life Advisory Committee (FLAC)..
  • Lead development of curriculum based on Board of Education goals, State Board of Education policy,and national standards.
  • Coordinate development, implementation, and revision of essential curriculum, curriculum resources, andassessments (formative and summative) aligned to state standards.
  • Coordinate the review, selection, and implementation of intervention and acceleration programs.
  • Design system-wide procedures to assist schools and teachers to collect, analyze, and interpretassessment data to inform curricular instructional decisions.
  • Recruit able teachers to assist in curriculum development.
  • Participate in evaluation and review of curricular area(s). Review and recommend curricular textbooks, resources, and equipment.
  • Review and recommend curricular textbooks, resources, instructional technology, equipment andfurniture best suited for implementation of curricula.
  • Develop and maintain a current list of textbooks, instructional resources, and equipment needed incurricular area to meet the established county-wide standard.
  • Lead process for selection and approval of textbooks including the removal of obsolete textbooks.
  • Respond to parent or community concerns regarding textbooks and instructional resources including anyrequired review of curriculum, textbooks, and instructional resources (e.g. by the Family Life and HumanDevelopment Curriculum Advisory Committee or other such committees).
  • Coordinate purchase of textbooks, instructional materials, instructional technology, and equipment withcentral office staff and building principals.
  • Assist in the planning of renovation, maintenance, and construction of school facilities and thedevelopment of required educational specifications.
Provide instructional support services and professional development to teachers and principals.
  • Collaborate with school system staff in the planning and implementation of curriculum and instructionprofessional development activities that support FCPS instructional goals and state mandates.
  • Coordinates system-wide, building-level, and department-level staff development programs forimplementation of curricula.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of the summer curriculum workshops, new teacher workshops,and MSDE credit workshops to ensure that all staff has the knowledge and skills needed to implementbest practices in the curricular area(s).
  • Assist teachers in implementing curriculum through the development of curriculum units, instruction onbest practices for implementation, and demonstration teaching.
  • Review literature, research, and materials related to curricular area(s) and communicate significantfindings to all stakeholders.
  • Assists in the interpretation of curricula to school personnel and to the public.
  • Observe teachers in conjunction with school-based administrators.
Facilitates Safe and Drug Free Schools Program
  • Coordinates program activities in the Safe and Drug Free Schools Program.
  • Prepares and manages the grant that supports the program.
  • Collaboratively develop, facilitate, and monitor with Director of Student Support and Supervisor ofcounseling all student programs related to the goals of the program.
  • Coordinate development, implementation, and monitoring of essential curriculum and instruction relatedto mandated state curriculum in program area.
  • Provides professional development for teachers and information programs for parents related to programgoals and objectives.
  • Seek and manage grants and external funding to support the goals of the school system as relates to theprogram.
  • Assist in the collection and reporting of data for reporting purposes to local, state and federal sources forthe program.
  • Organize and facilitate student programs that enhance understandings of program goals.
  • Establishes and maintains community partnerships that enhance resources available to program goals.
  • Communicate information and prepare reports for the Superintendent and Board of Education related tothe program.
  • Represent FCPS through participation on local, county, higher education, state and regional committeesrelated to the program.
  • Responds to questions and requests for program information from school personnel and the public.
Perform other administrative functions.
  • Supervise and evaluate central office staff (professional and support) who report directly to theSupervisor.
  • Assist in the employment of qualified staff through participation in screenings, interviews, and referencechecks.
  • Perform duties related to management of budget and approval of purchases of textbooks, materials, andequipment in conjunction with building principals and other school system staff.
  • Prepares budget requests to support curricular implementation and professional development for thecurricular area(s).
  • Seek and manage grants and external funding to support the goals of the school system as relates to thecurricular area(s).
  • Assist in the collection and reporting of data for reporting purposes to local, state and federal sources forthe curricular area(s).
  • Organize and facilitate student extracurricular programs that enhance curriculum content understandings.
  • Establishes and maintains community partnerships that enhance resources available to support studentachievement.
  • Communicate information and prepare reports for the Superintendent and Board of Education.
  • Represent FCPS through participation on local, county, higher education, state and regional committees.
  • Responds to questions and request for curricular information from school personnel and the public.
  • Supervises curricular program in Physical Education and Health.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
