Department Chairs are teacher leaders who serve as instructional models, professional learning facilitators, curriculum and assessment stewards, and communication liaisons between their departments and the administration. They champion a culture of instructional excellence by modeling best practices, supporting professional growth, promoting high-quality curriculum implementation, facilitating two-way communication, and maintaining alignment between department, school, and district goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructional Leadership Model best practices in instruction, assessment, and classroom environment, serving as an example for colleagues. Support professional growth by helping plan and potentially lead/facilitate department-level professional development and collaborative planning sessions. Mentor new and early-career teachers in the department, offering informal coaching and support. Promote and model data-driven instruction by supporting administrators in leading department efforts to analyze data, reflect on results, and identify instructional adjustments. Curriculum and Assessment Stewardship Assists in reinforcing consistent implementation of district curriculum standards across all courses. Assists in reinforcing consistent implementation of district common assessments across all courses. Collaborate with administration and curriculum teams to revise curriculum documents, unit plans, and pacing guides as needed to maintain relevance, rigor, and vertical alignment. Recommend pilot programs, innovative practices, professional development, and curricular improvements based on research and department needs. Professional Collaboration Facilitate regular department meetings focused on the goals for the department for the year. This could include, but is not limited to, data analysis, collaborative problem solving, co-planning lessons, professional learning, etc. Create and share agendas in advance of department meetings and maintain meeting minutes that document key decisions, instructional discussions, and follow-up actions. Communicate effectively between administration and department faculty, representing department perspectives and supporting the flow of information both ways. Foster a positive and collaborative culture within the department that encourages innovation, reflection, and mutual support. Establish instructional priorities, department goals, and improvement plans based on data. Lead department analysis of state, local, and formative assessment data. Use item-level and standard-level data to identify trends, strengths, and priority areas for improvement. Monitor student progress toward proficiency and support Tier 1 adjustments and Tier 2 interventions. Ensure alignment between classroom assessments, common assessments, and state assessment rigor. Operational Support Assist with budgeting and resource requests for the department, maintaining accurate inventories of instructional materials, textbooks, and technology. Support administration with coverage schedules, substitute lesson plans, and other operational logistics as needed. Leadership Evaluation and Goal Setting Department Chairs will participate in an annual evaluation process specific to their supplemental leadership role.
This includes:
Setting leadership goals aligned with the expectations outlined in this job description. Reflecting on and documenting progress toward those goals throughout the year. Participating in a year-end review with the supervising administrator to assess effectiveness in key areas such as instructional leadership, collaboration, communication, and contribution to department improvement. Evidence of leadership effectiveness may include artifacts such as agendas and notes from department meetings, facilitation of professional learning, contributions to curriculum work, department-wide implementation support, mentoring efforts, and feedback from department colleagues and/or administration.
Additional Duties:
Serve as the primary point of contact for department-specific honor societies, awards, and scholarships (e.g., assisting with Student Scholarships for Tiger Recognition Night). Support department-specific student initiatives or extracurricular opportunities as appropriate. Remain knowledgeable about new developments, research, and trends in the department's content area and instructional practices. Perform other duties related to the function of the position as assigned by the Principal or designee. Participate in monthly department chair meetings with the principal and monthly leadership meetings with the administrative team and teaching and learning supervisors to ensure alignment, collaboration, and consistent communication across departments. These meetings will be scheduled.
Minimum Qualifications:
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate Minimum 2 years secondary-level teaching experience in the relevant content area Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to work collaboratively Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and data analysis Effective communication, organization, and problem-solving skills Evidence of strong collegial relationships and professional credibility among peers, with the ability to lead by influence and collaboration Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding the highest standards of professional integrity when handling sensitive information related to staff, students, and the instructional program
Work Environment:
Employee works primarily inside a climate-controlled facility except during outdoor seasonal events. The position is classified as sedentary in nature as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor. Sedentary work is defined as exerting up to ten pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for intermittent periods of time. Typically required to bend at the waist, reach overhead and below the waist level on an occasional basis, and to reach at shoulder level on a regular basis. Routinely uses one or both hands for simple grasping and fine manipulation necessary for writing, accessing files and supplies, and operating a variety of general office equipment including computer, telephone and copy machine. Able to communicate with staff and colleagues over the telephone and face-to-face. The ability to perform documentation and paperwork, and process written information is also required. Functions at a high level and must possess the judgment, confidentiality and maturity required for making decisions that affect large numbers of staff, students and their families. The nature of the job requires dealing with sensitive information as well as broad-based information. May be required to work under stressful conditions when dealing with difficult issues and when dealing with teacher appraisal, community, competitive events, program alternatives, additions and implementation, and student behavior.
