Job Description
The Director of Literacy serves as the network-wide instructional leader responsible for driving reading and writing achievement across all campuses. This leader develops, implements, and monitors a comprehensive K-12 literacy strategy to ensure scholars achieve grade-level proficiency and demonstrate strong growth in reading comprehension, writing, and academic language development. The Director of Literacy ensures instructional coherence, intervention fidelity, and consistent literacy expectations across grade bands.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Literacy Strategy and Framework Development Design and refine a vertically aligned K-12 literacy framework. Establish clear proficiency and growth benchmarks across grade levels. Ensure consistent implementation of evidence-based reading and writing practices. Oversee curriculum alignment and instructional expectations for literacy. Define writing progression standards across elementary, middle, and high school. Data and Performance Oversight Analyze network-wide literacy data including screeners, benchmarks, and state assessments. Identify subgroup performance gaps and grade-level trends. Develop improvement plans to increase literacy proficiency and growth. Monitor progress of scholars receiving reading interventions. Provide regular literacy performance reports to leadership. Coaching and Leader Development Coach Academic Deans, literacy leads, and Assistant Principals of Instruction. Lead network-wide professional development focused on reading and writing instruction. Conduct literacy-focused instructional audits. Support onboarding and development of literacy-focused educators. Intervention and Support Systems Oversee Tier 2 and Tier 3 literacy intervention frameworks. Ensure fidelity of intervention implementation across campuses. Strengthen small-group instruction and progress monitoring systems. Support literacy systems for multilingual learners and scholars with IEPs. Organizational Collaboration Partner with the Managing Director of Academics to align literacy strategy with broader academic goals. Collaborate with mathematics and humanities leaders to strengthen cross-content literacy integration. Support talent strategy related to literacy staffing and development. Accountability Network-wide reading proficiency rates Writing performance metrics Literacy growth across grade bands Reduction in scholars reading below grade level Fidelity of literacy implementation across campusesQUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Master's Degree in Literacy, Education, or related field required Reading Specialist certification strongly preferred 5-8+ years of literacy instructional leadership experience Demonstrated success improving reading and writing outcomes Strong data analysis and coaching expertise Experience leading literacy systems across multiple grade levelsEQUAL OPPORTUNITIES EMPLOYER HFCA
