Job Description

Open Rank Full-Time Faculty Position in Directing Join our community and experience Emerson College! The Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College invites applications for a Full-time faculty position in Directing. This is an Open Rank position, commensurate with experience, of Tenure (Associate or Full Professor), Tenure Track (Assistant Professor), or Artist-In-Residence (full-time, non-tenure-track). This position will teach in the area of Directing at the undergraduate or graduate levels, mentor student directors, and may direct one to two productions during each Emerson Stage season. The appointment begins August 20, 2026 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 20 & 21, 2026. Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Emerson Stage is the production company within the Department of Performing Arts and produces approximately eight fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects and student theatre organizations. In its structure and processes, Emerson Stage models professional theatre-making practices and seeks to expand, respond to, and create the next generation of theatre-makers. Season selections are based primarily on the training needs of our students, specifically our undergraduate students.
The required qualifications include:
Minimum of 6 years of professional theatre directing experience. Must demonstrate knowledge of areas of theatre training offered in the Performing Arts Department at Emerson College, which may include devised processes, physical theater, musical theater, and experimental theater among others. Experience teaching and mentoring students at the college-level or in a conservatory setting. Hold a terminal degree (MFA) or equivalent professional experience in the area of Directing. Active engagement in professional and artistic organizations, conferences, and networks related to performing and directing theater Professional affiliation with The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), or others Submission materials: Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and three names of references that can offer a candid assessment of the candidate's contributions to theatre and teaching/mentorship of emerging artists (not to be contacted without the candidate's approval). Additional materials may be requested at a later date including a portfolio of creative and professional work and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Compensation:
