Title:
1.0 FTE MS Drama Teacher
Position Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and versatile Drama Teacher to join our vibrant, arts-supported community. This role is perfect for an educator who balances strong theater pedagogy with a warm, inclusive teaching style—someone who can empower both the beginner discovering drama for the first time and the experienced actor aiming for excellence. As a key collaborator within our dedicated K-12 performing arts department, the Drama Teacher will teach theater arts to students in grades 6-8 and direct our major middle school productions. Duties and Responsibilities Design and deliver engaging drama curricula for grades 6-8 based on the Massachusetts DESE Arts Framework, translating curriculum guidelines into age-appropriate, dynamic classroom practice. Foster a supportive classroom environment that builds confidence, collaboration, and creative expression for students of all skill levels. Evaluate student progress in artistic literacy, performance skills, and conceptual understanding of theater arts. Direct, manage, and elevate student actors in our annual performance calendar, including a fall play, a winter musical, and an METG competition production. Lead dynamic, productive after-school rehearsals that focus on skill-building, teamwork, and ensemble creation. Coordinate with tech crews and volunteers to oversee staging, costuming, and technical elements for community performances. Actively collaborate within the K-12 performing arts department to ensure vertical alignment and a cohesive arts experience for students. Showcase student talent through school assemblies, community showcases, and regional arts events.
Qualifications:
MA DESE Licensure or eligibility 5-8 in applicable field Dual licensure in Special Education or ESL highly desirable
SEI Endorsement:
Evidence of Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement is mandatory. Strong understanding of pre/adolescent academic, social, and emotional development
Cultural Competency:
Experience with diverse populations and a strong commitment to Wayland's goals of diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion Knowledge of student-centered teaching practices and heterogeneous classroom instruction Familiarity with Massachusetts Standards-Based curriculum, UDL principles, and SEL supports Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment Bilingual skills desirable
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in education or a related area required Master's degree preferred Experience directing performances including selection of repertoire, securing rights, recruiting, scheduling, costuming, props, publicity, ticketing. Experience with set design, lighting, and sound Experience teaching in a diverse public middle school preferred Experience working with students with disabilities/special abilities preferred Experience working with students who are English language learners preferred Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and PowerSchool preferred, but will train the right candidate Spanish bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, as a Spanish immersion program exists at the middle school level. Salary Range:
Commensurate with the
WEA Unit A Salary Scale Example:
Master's through Master's +30 range $95,754 -$126,651 • Jazz band responsibilities are after school and have a stipend.
