Job Description
Purpose Statement The job of Transportation Shop Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing mechanic services with specific responsibility for performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance; ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards; providing information on the proper uses of equipment; assisting other mechanics and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site; and assuming the role of bus driver when needed. This job reports to the Transportation Supervisor and daily assignments from Lead Mechanic. Essential Functions Assists with preparing and maintaining written materials (e.g. repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warranty claims, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and meeting mandated requirements. Attends unit in-service and safety meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle. Drives when necessary for the purpose of shuttling vehicles for services to various shops for repairs. Drives school bus/es for the purpose of transporting passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips or other events in a safe and timely manner. Inspects assigned gas and diesel powered equipment/vehicles (e.g. brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, wiper blades, fan belts, exterior and interior condition, DPF systems, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the equipment/vehicle is in a safe operating condition. Maintains tools, parts, equipment and/or shop area for the purpose of obtaining the necessary parts, tools and equipment as needed and ensuring safety within the workspace. Performs the functions of School Bus Driver for the purpose of meeting staffing requirements to ensure immediate transportation service needs. Performs minor collision repairs (e.g. tail lights, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the buses and vehicles assuring compliance with State and Federal standards. Performs a variety of routine equipment/vehicle maintenance program (e.g. oil change, tire rotation, brake check, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in a safe operating condition and meeting mandated requirements. Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating school buses and/or district vehicles; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles; inspecting vehicles; fire extinguisher; handling hazardous materials; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. KNOWLEDGE
is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of maintaining vehicles; methods of storage and removal of hazardous materials; and safety practices and procedures; job-related codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; methods of industrial cleaning; methods of vehicle cleaning; emergency evacuation techniques, first aid; two way radio communication; and utilizing wheel chairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts, etc. ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working with interruptions; displaying mechanical aptitude; enjoy working with children; working as part of a team; attentive to detail; and maintaining an understanding of the special needs of students and their parents. Responsibility Responsibilities include:

Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 50% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Experience Job related experience is required. Education Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area. Equivalency Any combination equivalent to:
graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Experience in vehicle maintenance and repairs is preferred. The stated education and experience requirements are the preferred minimum qualifications for this job. However, relevant experience to substitute for the education requirement and relevant education, certificates and/or licenses to substitute for the experience requirement may be allowed.
