Position Summary Spokane Colleges District Workforce Development seeks qualified candidates for employment for consideration in this adjunct (part-time) position teaching Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A training at our Spokane College campus. The CDL Trainer will provide professional, safety-focused instruction in vehicle operation, backing techniques, and pre-trip inspection to prepare students for the Washington State CDL Class A skills and knowledge exams. In addition to instructional duties, this position includes responsibility for the safe transportation and coordination of the training truck and trailer to and from the training site, testing center, maintenance facility, and other program-related locations as needed. Duties and Responsibilities Provide professional CDL Class A instruction to students in accordance with Spokane Community College's (SCC) established curriculum, including: On-road, range, and backing instruction Pre-trip inspections and safety checks Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Washington State CDL standards Monitor and evaluate student performance during driving and inspection activities; provide constructive feedback to the lead instructor and students. Maintain a safe learning environment and ensure compliance with all college, state, and federal safety regulations. Transport the CDL truck and/or trailer between SCC, the training range, the testing center, the maintenance shop, and other locations as needed. Maintain vehicle cleanliness and perform basic vehicle checks (fluids, tires, safety equipment); coordinate vehicle maintenance and repairs with program staff. Communicate student expectations, objectives, and progress using appropriate instructional and evaluation methods.
- Participate in district, division, department, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; curriculum development; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; service on district or college councils or committees, or other activities with the scope of the position.
- Comply with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements.
- Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
- Support and advance the Spokane Colleges strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Competencies (Minimum Qualifications) Minimum five (5) years of verifiable experience driving with a CDL Class A License (no air brake restriction). Ten (10) year driving abstract with no violations within the past three (3) years. Documented, verifiable industry-related training or experience. Thorough knowledge of FMCSA and Washington State CDL laws, testing requirements, and traffic regulations. Demonstrated ability to perform and teach double-clutching and other essential Class A driving techniques. Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional under stressful or high-pressure driving instruction conditions. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage and instruct adult learners of diverse backgrounds. Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist students during vehicle inspections or driving practice; agility and dexterity required. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including daytime, evening, or weekend hours, and in all weather conditions. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience as a CDL instructor or industry trainer in a community college, vocational school, or private carrier training environment. Current FMCSA-certified ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) instructor credential. Experience conducting pre-trip and skills testing or working with state CDL testing centers. Basic mechanical aptitude and experience coordinating truck or trailer maintenance. Experience teaching or mentoring in workforce education settings.
Conditions / Terms
of Employment This is an adjunct (part-time) position; compensation is pro-rated according to workload assigned. A ride-along assessment will be conducted as part of the hiring process. Candidates must be willing to audit a classroom lecture prior to teaching. Employment is contingent upon a criminal background check, acceptable driving record, and proof of current CDL Class A license. Spokane Colleges maintains a drug-free work and learning environment and prohibits smoking in all state-owned buildings and vehicles. Work Schedule Approximately 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, some weekends (schedule varies based on class sessions and testing dates).
